Default PCM Problem

Just received the updated NAVtech CD's for my business partners PCM, but he can't get the CD drive to open/eject the existing CD. Both lights are on and we pressed the button to eject the CD, but it does not eject. We tried disconnecting the battery and re-entering the PCM codes, but ti only requests the code for the radio, not for the NAV. Any ideas on how to correct this?

I am afraid that you have not provided anywhere near enough information about the actual 996 involved. Is it an 8-bit or 16-bit system? Which NavTeq CDs? When asking these kinds of questions detail is paramount because of the different systems employed by Porsche in the various model years.
You have to be really careful when playing around with the PCM because if you get things out of whack like playing with the power it will freeze up.

To reset your system you need to do the following.
1/. Ensure you have a fully charged battery then turn on the ignition and turn the PCM OFF using the left side lower **** then turn the ignition off.
2/. Remove fuses E5 and E6 from the left side footwell fuse and relay panel. The chart is on the inside of the cover.
3/. Leave fuses out for at least 60 seconds. 5 minutes is better with the older systems.
4/. Reinsert the fuses turn the ignition on and turn the PCM on using the left side lower **** and DO NOT touch anything else until asked by the PCM.
5/. Follow the instructions on the screen to insert the equipment codes from your code cards. You will be asked to insert the PCM and Navigation control unit (CD unit) codes.
6/. When the codes have been inserted the system should activate. If the words system update or upload come up LEAVE ALONE until completed. Only once the system seems to be working normally do you attempt to remove the CD.
Of course none of this is any good if the button on the CD unit is kaput or the CD is stuck for some reason. However I know from experience that if you mess about with the system power logic it can freeze up.
Ciao,
Adrian.

PS: Rule number one with the PCM is: "Never try anything with out adequate power available. A battery charger should be connected to the battery if you are working on this system for any length of time and NEVER disconnect the battery". Disconnecting the battery invokes the security protocols of the car. This is why you pull fuses instead.
Rule number two with the PCM is: "Always make sure the old system is working first before attempting any upgrades be they hardware and/or software. These rules apply to any car not just Porsches fitted with the CD type systems. The DVD systems are slightly different being fully digital, but the same basic rules apply.
