$400 too cheap for windshield replacement?
Have a chip in my windshield and went in to Safelite today to have it repaired. Guy doiing the repair noticed yet another chip that was too close to the bottom of the windshield to be repaired so... new windshield time.
They quoted me a little less than $400 all in. Does that seem really cheap to anyone else? I grilled the guy for awhile and asked what kind of glass they were using. His response was "they only make premium glass for that car". I told him others have had isueds with squeaks, etc. He said I would not and he would do my car personally.
Guy's a real gearhead and seems to really know his cars. I spoke with him at length about his race cars. But $400? Seems fishy to me. Thoughts?

I always thought that safetlite manufactured there own glass. I believe all Porsche glass for 996s is manufactured by sekurit(sp?). I did a windshield for about 500 so 400 is not that far off. As far as squeeks mine started about 2 weeks after new glass installed. I installed the foam rope from the TSB no more squeeks.

what's the TSB rope? I have a crack straight down the center of my windshield. I'ts almost a vertical line.
I'm hesistant to fix it unless I figure out what caused it because I don't want it to happen again. Anyone recommend a service?

There is a technical service bulletin for windshield creeking/squeeking that calls for the installation of a foam like rope between the windshield molding and car body. It is an easy DIY.

I think that sounds about right...unless Porsche windshields are specially different somehow.
This may be apples to oranges but when I worked at a shop, the cost for a OEM Nissan windshield was $75...

Safelite put one in my wife's Boxster which is the same as the 996. They installed it at home in a little over an hour. I asked the guy to be especially careful as my wife is real picky when it comes to letting someone work on her car. This was a made in USA glass whis is far superior to German as it is harder and less prone to scratches and small rock chips. The price was under $400 installed and other quotes from several local glass companys ranged from $225 to just under $600. I found out thru a friend that there are a couple of local glass distributers that all installers buy from and pay the same price. The guy that charges the least amount has the lowest margin.

I'm wondering...is it just here in Florida that it's illegal to have a cracked windshield,
and that's why my windshield is automatically covered by my auto insurance.
Also, replacing a windshield will not affect my premium.

Your windshield is covered by your auto insurance because it is part of the safety restraint system. Meaning in the event of an accident whereby you fly into the front glass it absorbs much of the energy rather than cracking and throwing you out of the car. The front windshiled also has some plastic coatings on/in it to absorb the impact as well. Insurance companies want to make certain this safety restraint system is up to the task and provides the insured an incentive to get it replaced accordingly.
