My dealer told me my car will need front brakes very soon. The dealer just did my 30,000 service.

They want $1,000 to do front pads and rotors. He said rotors have to be done at the same time according to Porsche.

Question: Is this true?
Doesn't $1,000 seem high for front brakes only.

Does everyone change pads and rotors every 30,000. The dealer said they do. I'm not hard on brakes, no tracking etc. I'm inclined to just change the pads out for EBC green. The C4S like the Turbo has quick change calipers , I believe,

I've had several changes already done. I had both pads and rotors replaced at all 4 corners each time. Is it necessary to chnage both pads and rotors? Quick answer is no. But since I track the car, I don't want to have any doubts about the brakes. Dealerships have a tendency to recommend both rotor and pad change, not just because it means more money, but because it's the best way to assure good brakes and avoid any legal hassles should anything happen in this litigenous society of ours. Rotors have to be changed if there are cracks that go through and through and communicate two or more of the holes, or if the rotors are worn down to a point. In the absence of either, you can keep the rotors and just change the pads. At 30K miles of all street driving, you can probably get away with just changing the pads.

As far as cost, I think it cost me $1200.00 for all 4 each time.

 

Two things concerning your rotors:
1. Have you visually inspected them to verify for cracks, etc?
2. Have them SHOW you with a micrometer the rotor measurements and then post back.

Personally I doubt you need rotors as the rotors on these cars are VERY durable unless you are tracking the car hard which would necessitate changing them more often.

As for the pads, you can DIY this VERY cheaply.

Here are prices posted on Suncoast's website for a C4S. Probably get all of this a bit cheaper from Sunset. But still, you get the idea.

Fronts: Pads $168 Rotors $295 for both
Rears: Pads $112 Rotors $268 for both

According to them, they are charging you over $500 for install on just one axle? Just DIY and have $$$ left over to wine and dine the special lady in your life (and the results afterward are much better)

 

Just do pads. They are so easy you can do it yourself. If you aren't comfortable with it, just a shop to do it with 1 hr labor. If the stock pads served you well, get it from a dealer or call around a few shops online for stock pads. OEM pads are made by textar I think. allgermanparts.com sells Pagid and Textar for less than dealer. You can reuse the sensor if the brake wear light hasn't come on. If in doubt, just replace the sensors as well.

 

The OE suppliers will not sell the same pad compound aftermarket that they supply to Porsche.

Question: does it take a soecial tool for rear pads because of the emergency brake? Also, has anyone tried the EBC green pads? I think EBC is the correct brand.

I'll measure their thickness when I change pads. Anyone know the required thickness of the C4S rotors?

 

I found a set of pads at Suncoast for $112. The set of rotors is $229. $341 for the rotors and pads. Does anyone know what to torque the rotors at when I put them on?

 

63 ft lbs I believe, you'll need a special torx bit/socket, actually an easy diy, no special tools for the e brake. Check out renntech, they have a nice diy section with pics. If you're gonna do rotors, do all 4.

 

Make sure those are for the C4S which they are NOT at the prices you posted. Sounds like the prices for the C2/C4.

 

Brake disc to wheel hub (M6) 10Nm (7.5 ft-lb)
Brake caliper on front and rear axles (M12 x 1.5) 85Nm (63 ft-lb)

For the caliper bolts, "Thinly grease thread, shank and under head (between screw head bearing surface and spherical cap ring) of the wheel bolts with Optimoly TA (aluminum paste). Do not grease bearing surface of the spherical cap facing the wheel. If heavily contaminated, clean bolts first with a lint-free cloth."

The part numbers for the MY02+ C4S brakes;

the rear pads will eventually change to part #996-352-949-03 when #996-352-949-02 is out of stock.

 

The NY Porsche dealers quoted me $1300 for front brakes and rotors.

Rob, it's actually very easy, just be sure you have everything before you start.

 

Very true. I will wind up getting new tools, toolbox, new lights for the garage, of course I'll need a new garage floor then I'll paint the garage and buy storage racks, then I'll want a new lift so I'll have that installed.

After 2 months and spending $20,000 rebuilding my entire garage, I wont have time for the brakes and I'll take them in to get them done.
