X-ctry trip
Just returned last Sunday from a 2 week long trip from Orange County, California to West Palm Beach FL and return via Vegas. What a blast! I had a bunch of vacation time built up that I needed to use and the wife had just started a new job, so she was not able to join me. My mother lives in Palm Beach Gardens, so I thought it was a good way to visit her,and being a pilot for a living I was sick of sitting in a plane, so driving was the next best choice.
I ended up driving just about 5400 miles total. I left on a Friday at noon and arrived in West Palm at 5 PM on Monday. the return I left West palm at 10 aM on Wednesday and arrived in Vegas Friday at 5PM, (just enough time to take a shower, hit the craps table, and drive to the airport and pick up the wife for a short weekend in vegas)
Had the top down for most of the trip to Florida and part of the return trip. texas was the worst part of the trip - the heat (above 100 for almost the whole time), and a long and boring state! On the trip out i stopped in Las Cruces, NM, Houston, TX, and Tallahassee, FL. the return, was Natchitoches, LA, and Albuquerque, NM. I averaged just over 25 MPG.
Just before the trip, I had a Kenwood DDX-6019 with Sirius, and navigation installed, along with a Bel RX65 radar detector. The RX65 saved me from at least 5 tickets, if not more on the trip. Having the Sirius to listen too, made the trip.
As far as other drivers, after having lived in Florida for 10 years earlier and now California, Florida positively has the worst drivers in the country! One funny thing was that wherever I was, even though I kept the cruise control set at one speed, it seemed that when people see a porsche they have to speed up and try to go faster than you, even though I was going one constant speed. Every single one of them I would pass a few miles down the road as I kept my same speed and they just could not maintain one speed!
the pictures below are:
1-arrival in Palm Beach Gardens on the Kenwood DDX-6019
2-day one complete adn day 2 jsut about to start on teh return trip.
3-start of the trip in Cali.
4-Detour off of I-10 in Lafayette, LA on to backroads due to accident closing down I-10.
5- nav picure of above.
6-gen. patton museum outside Palm Springs.
Would I do the trip again - NO! but it was a trip of a lifetime, and a great way to see the country.

Sounds like an awsome trip. Kudos for actually getting your Porsche out and DRIVING it. Some people don't put 5400 miles on a Porsche in two years, much less two weeks. Shame on them!

and your wife let you go?? Lucky you...mine would take time off, to just sit next to me telling me to slow down....works better than a radar detector!!!
Must have been a great trip..and yes the state of Texas..naah..drove thru the top of it on my way from NYC to Orange County CA.....a whole lot of nothing!!

Being a life-long Texan, I take offense to the comment that Texas is a state of boredom and nothing!
What do you expect to see on a major interstate highway anyway? Should've veered off the beaten path into the hill countries for some driving fun. That'd be a better representation of what the great state of Texas has to offer in terms of scenic driving excitement. Texas may not have the canyon or coastal views, but the hill countries will give your Porsche a great workout.

What a trip on a 996, good for you... nice car and great looking Nav system. May I ask what is the function of the switch below the PSM one? I see that you have also done the rear spoiler switch, nice...
Cheers,

the other switch is a garage door opener. I believe the switch is from a targa, and I just wired my current garage door opener to it.( the opener is just stuffed behind the switch) It works further than any of the other openers in our other vehicles. the instructions I found were located at renntech.org
