If you don’t want your cup holder above your electronics you can download this file http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:292359 and have someone print it out on a 3D printer. I designed it for my ’99 but it should fit any model with a console ashtray. Remove ashtray 2.3 seconds, insert cup holder 2.1 seconds.
If you want to move your climate control down as shown in the image you will need this kit from Suncoast parts. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product..._Code=996intup
This is an extra storage bin that fits perfectly into the space where the CD holder is. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product..._Code=996intup

I haven't found any pics of anyone who relocated the cup holders to the lower section where the Cd tray was. The cup holders look larger than the CD tray. Does it definitely fit in that location fine?

I actually don't think that's even possible and most likely why there are no images of it. You've also bumped a 10+ year old thread FYI

BTW, the 10+ year tread actually had great information for my 10+ year car, which is better than starting a new tread about the exact same topic.
Here's my setup. It's a Kenwood DNX9990HD head unit with factory cup holders mounted in the lower console.
I used the cage that came with the headunit, bought the wiring harness and antenna adapter on ebay and made the face plate.
The faceplate is a 1/4" thick piece of plexiglass with the back side painted black. This give the faceplate a deep high gloss finish similar to the head unit (hard to tell in the picture).
The cup holders are not complete as I have a new cup holder surround to trim. My Dremel battery went dead when trimming the cup holder surround and I tried something else. Bad idea, as I basically "hacked up" the cup holder surround.
FYI getting the cup holder to work like this is a royal PITA. The stock cup holder doesn't even come close to fitting, so it's definitely a custom project. You will need to significantly cut down the cup holder chassis, its surround and also trim the opening in the console slightly.
When that's complete you will need to build a frame to mount the cup holder chassis to and attach it to the console. After this is complete, you will have a functional cup holder, but not a great cup holder. It's not only shallow, but now at an angle. Basically you undertake the cup holder project at your own risk.

I found a tread on 6peedonline where one guy relocate the cup holder.

Okay I see, so then they can be moved on a MK1.
Good luck with the project
