Hi All,
I just picked up my first P-car, an '01 996 cab with 15K miles on it, last weekend. I just had its 15K service performed, and everything is now in working order -- the seal for the crankshaft was leaking, and fixed under warranty. Since I got it I have put about 1700 miles on it, getting it home, and running it a bit this weekend.
I know that convertibles are noisier than other cars due to the decrease in torsional rigidity, but there is one noise that's beginning to annoy me. On every single defect on any road, at normal driving speeds, there is a 'squeak' <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" /> that occurs on the driver's side door - just left and behind my head. It sounds like the friction on the latch mechanism rubbing when the left-rear suspension releases after taking a bump. Obviously, this twists the car and that latch is a contact point, thus there are forces acting on it as it tries to twist the door to act like the rest of the body.
My questions are:
1) Has anyone else experienced this annoying sound on their car?
2) If yes, should I just get some heavy grease on that latch?
3) If no, is this the sort of thing a Porsche dealer would actually try to diagnose and fix for me?
I'm used to Audi dealers who try to talk you out of having them do anything. I'm also in a one shop town, Las Vegas, where the only dealer is Gaudin.
Any help would sure be appreciated.
Thanks,
James

I had some squeaks in my passenger side dashboard and with the hardtop on my 01 996 cab. My dealer took it apart and put in extra insulation and or fixed the squeaks. That is their job and you should go get it done while the warranty is still in place. Why get your hands greasy?! The dealer gets paid for their warranty work so they should be amenable to taking care of your problem and if they want your future business.
I would be wary of the main seal leak. You may be entitled to a new engine depending on the cause of the leak. If the engine and crankshaft is misaligned, it may be impossible to get a proper seal. Keep an eye on that problem and bring the car back for a check-up soon to see if the seal is in fact repaired/repairable!

Thank you all for your prompt replies. I will ask them to take care of this the next time I am in, if I can bear it 'til my next service.
I will be armed with the TSBs you all have replied with.
Thanks Again,
James
