Posted on "water and 996" thread in 993 forum. Hmmm, I guess we can take up a collection to buy her some glasses because I can't even imagine someone seeing a similarity.
And some guy accused this board of bashing 993's!!!??? Go figure.

Don't stir this pot.
There are a few gents on the 993 board who don't hold the 996 in very high esteem (and, there are probably a few 996'ers that don't like the 993).
However, there are plenty of "aircooled" guys that like the 996. Most of those guys (in the thread) are just expressing preferences. It should not be a surprise to anyone that if you ask people what they prefer on the 993 board the lions share will prefer the 993 and if you ask over here most will prefer the 996.
I think the 993 is a great Porsche, but I'm not going to trade my 996 for one. I suspect that most 993 owners feel the same way about trading for a 996.

Many people (normally women, but a large portion of men) do not specifically or singularily identify auto-shapes as well as "we" do - us crazy enthusiasts. They see no real difference between a 944 and a 928, or a F 348 and Datsun, for that matter.
I have trained my wife otherwise, but many people I know do not distinguish these shapes. I can't tell a Picasso from a (insert something also line-drawn and impressionist).

I do see your point, Brendan. I guess I was looking at it as a ploy to take an indirect jab at the much maligned 996, like "my friend says "yada yada yada."" My philosophy is be direct: If you want to take a jab, do it yourself. I myself like all P-cars (and Picassos).
Even with intense instruction my wife can only now tell a 911 from other cars - we have neighbors with 997S and 964 and to her they all look alike - all 911s. But then she thinks Boxsters are "cuter" than 911's so what do I know? But, paradoxically, she can distinguish a genuine Hermes purse from a knock-off at 100 yards. Now THAT is a useful skill *_*

Didn't someone on this board once relate that after he got out of his car a good looking woman commented on how much she liked his Camero (after reading, or trying to read, "Carrera" on the rear of the car)?

No, you got the wrong picture, discogonya. That first one is a 993!!
Seriously, I just came from looking through the 993 board. There's a lot of 996 bashing going on in there. Recently, there have been two threads here at the 996 board that could easily have turned into a 993 bashing spree. Instead, the posts has just been laughed off and made into a big joke. That speaks a lot about the people of this board, owners of a 996, and of the car. We are secure in the knowledge that the 996 is an excellent car.
Wonder what all that 996 bashing over at the 993 board says about the 993 owners and their cars ?

I don't know discoganya...now that you put them side by side and in the same color...they look very much alike!!!
I see windshields, round wheels, headlight, grils, doorhandels, side mirrors......OOOHHH they both fall in the category: automobile!!!
I love the camero (carrera) remark!!!

She didn't say "identical twins," she said "looks like." She did not "mistake a 911 for a Taurus." Yes, even the "stupidest of people" can tell them apart. Only an even more stupid person doesn't understand the concept of "looks like." I've known "car guys" who mistook a 356 for a Bug or a Speedster for a Ghia. She didn't do that. She was making a comparison, not mistaking one for the other.
As far as being direct, I find it presumptuous of you that you assume you know my intent. Yes, I could easily use my wife's statement as a jab against the 996 (it is a good one, isn't it? ). I guess you'll have to trust me when I say it was posted in a friendly, elbow-poke kind of way. (Should have put in a for the sensitive types.) I happen to prefer the 993 over the 996, for a number of "reasons," most of which come down to personal preference and don't need to be reiterated here. I have the deepest respect for all Porsche enthusiasts, regardless of model. If you're driving around the Bay Area and see a metallic black 993 flash its headlights at you, it might just be me.
Doonesbury, however, I have no respect for.

C'mon, Bruce. Don't be so sensitive. The cracks about you and your wife and your car were said in a friendly elbow-poke kind of a way. Lighten up. Doonesbury hasn't said anything to lose respect for.
