One eye rear fog light
Is it true that only the driver side rear fog light works on US models?
This is what the service dept told me.
The euro models get two fog lights.

I thought I remembered hearing the one light signified that it was "ok" for people to pass you at high speed, say on the autobahn. a "hey, i'm staying put so you can fly by" beacon of sorts. The drivers side designation would show you can pass on the left? Obviously not all that useful in the states - any European guys know if there's any truth to that?

The one light, on the drivers side, shows it is safe to pass on the drivers side. If there were two, you would have a harder time distinguishing them from brake lights, and if the driver's side burnt out, you wouldn't see where to pass.

The one fog light has no relation to signaling to pass in autobahn, in fact cars with both fog lights here do not allow you to turn only one on. The fact that it europe usually there is only one rear fog light on the left side is because here you can only overtake from the left so only the left one is needed technically.
Over here if you want to signal the car behind you to overtake you such as a slow truck, you turn on your right turn signals and keep moving. And if you are the one on the left lane overtaking at high speeds such as autobahn you leave you left turn signal on while on the left lane telling other drivers to clear the left lane.

There was a kit for the 993 that allowed for the operation of a passenger side rear fog light. I remember it because there was a discussion on people confusing it with brake lights. I had a kit for mine, but I never installed it. Later sold it on ebay. I don't know if there is a conversion for the 996.
You might ask the 993 guys about it.

I have guys coming up to me as well telling me I have one light out - and they are actually proving to me that the fog lamps are doing what they are supposed to be doing.
That tells me that they ARE PAYING ATTENTION to you and that's EXACTLY what you want the other drivers on the road to do when it is foggy out guys!
