Some folks asked me to look at this a few months ago.

The socket for the 2nd rear fog light is there in the passenger side rear light housing. What is not present is the wiring from that socket to the switch. You would need to run a wire from that light assembly to the front dash switch (no easy task) or through the engine comparment (not recommended) to the other rear fog light.

Again, two fog lights would likely confuse most drivers -- so why do it.

In the US any rear fog light confuses people. So do parking lights.

But since they are uncommon, it is very helpful when someone is trying to follow you on busy streets.

Here is what they say about the 1 rear fog light on the UK Boxster board.

Do UK Porsches have the right rear fog light instead of the left?

I think so for the 986/996. Might post on the UK board as some have had 996s. One of these days I will check the 986/996 wiring diagrams and see what is involved in running a jumper wire. Not hot on my list as we do not have fog, just smog. Jeff

Refering to what Carlos from Spain said:

The last time I was in Germany I was on the Autobahn (riding in a tour bus), and we saw many hot cars (Porsche, Bimmer, Benz) driving ultra fast in the left lane with their left turn signals activated. I asked the tour guide what that was about, and he said that means they want to overtake anyone in the lane in front of them, and all drivers in front were required to pull to the right if it was safe.

That is so cool. How nice would it be if you're following some jerk in an Oldsmobile going 60 in the fast lane, and you could just "turn signal" him out of the way. Instead we've got A-Holes who have license plate frames that read "The closer you get, the slower I go". Europeans definitely have the driving thing down alot better than we Yanks.

Few people realize that "slower traffic keep right" is the law in most states, and is entirely separate and distinct from the speed limit laws. (In other words, it doesn't matter that they are doing the speed limit or over in the left lane, if someone is faster, the slower traffic must move right).

Yes, your absolutely right guys if you see someone appproaching from behind and you're in the left lane, its not only the law to leave the left lane free, its the decent civilised courtious and logical thing to do, even if you yourself are overtaking other people, just pop into the right lane and then pop back to the left and resume overtaking again... unfortunately here in Europe its not always like that too and sometimes you have to overtake those idiots from the right WOT even though its ilegal and dangerous

To make matters worse, it seems customary around here to get out of the right lane as soon as you get on the highway. As a result, the right lane is often completely free of any traffic and open for going just about as fast as you want ... completely backwards!

Same out here pete01, and once that realization finally sunk in with me my blood pressure dropped enormously and freeway driving became enjoyable again for the first time in years. If you think about it, its a lot more fun (and probably safer as well) for the faster driver to be the one doing the lane changing rather than some idiot who can barly drive the speed limit while going straight in on lane.

dang right Jeff...people on here talk about passing on the right being so dangerous. it's not nearly as dangerous as driving with the flow of traffic (in the left lane of course), with some teenage girl on your butt so close you can't see the bumper of her car...i drive 230+ miles per day to and from work and i've definitely learned the value in aggressive/active safety.

Loren, that's the way the 993 was set up as well, but there was a kit complete with wiring socket, bulb..and even a switch if need be for the right side. If anyone is interested they can do a search on the 993 Forum.

One light is enough to allow followers to be more alert when approaching a car in the fog. BTW, Volvo has one, and there may be other non German cars that have one as well.

Probably will come to US assembled cars about the time the hydrogen fuel cell hits the street!

Here's the link for the 993 for the 2nd rear fog light. http://p-car.com/diy/rfl/

You might have to go to www.p-car.com and sign the disclimer.

I gotta believe that if there was one for the 996 it would be similar to this one.

I did it on my Boxster. I think the wiring color codes are the same on a 996, but we have a rear trunk so we can do it with a 4' piece of wiring that jumps the active 12 volts wire to the inactive wire on the other side. Jeff
