Post Motorsport Ranch DE near Ft. Worth past weekend

Well, it was my first time at DE. Took my '02 996
C2 up to Motorsport Ranch just southwest of Fort
Worth, TX. The facility was great I thought. The
track was quite technical, 8 major corners, 1 set
of chincances, some off camber turns, up hill and
down hill corners, and 3 major straights. My
instructor and I got along great. I started out
in green run group (always for first timers), but
progressed rapidly enough to move up to the blue
run group on Sunday. I must say the highlight was
getting a ride in my instructors GTC3 cup car.
The cornering and braking was mind-blowing. It
reminded me and felt like the time I went for a
ride in an Air Force ROTC training prop plane
back in college and did loop-to-loops and twists.
Anyways, by the end of the day Sunday I guess
I was pushing my completely-stock car fast enough
that my tires started feeling really gooey
(drifting out more at track out) and my brakes
started fading a bit--braking hard from about 105
down to maybe 45 off of main straight. How do
I know if it was my pads or fluid? Does this
sound within the limits of stock pads/fluid
on a '02 996 C2??

Probably the fluid. Bleed them and see if they come back, if not you baked the pads.

If you keep doing de's and it sounds like you will, consider getting DOT 5 brake fluid and higher performance brake pads. I use ATE Super Blue fluid and Pagid Orange pads.

Brake cooling has much to do with the performance of the brakes during extended aggressive use, such as during a de. There is an excellent article on brakes in the current issue of Roundel (BMW CCA). In this regard, I have had aftermarket brake ducts installed.
Enjoy,
Mike
