What kind of Nitrous shot can the 3.4 996 engine take (safe)
Being safe, what kind of a N20 shot can the 3.4l 996 take?

spend the money saving for the turbo conversion or the supercharger kit if you really want to do stuff that will put out. That former thread about the modified giac chip sounded pretty good too if you are going the na route.

What makes me more interested in this is the fact that I can find nobody that has done it, lol! It's quite funny to me as it is very common in the Corvette and Viper communities I come from.
I don't really want to supercharge as if I was to spend an extra 10k on my car, in honesty I would just buy a Turbo for the extra money. I also like spending my cash on exterior mods (for example I am changing my front spoiler due to hitting a dog, I think I will go turbo front)
As for the N20, I has it on my vette, used it maybe 10 times, and enjoyed just having it there if I needed / wanted it.
I love the way my 996 drives, it's the best car i have ever owned hands down, however the power is not what i would like (I feel most 996 owners are in the same camp) and since there is very little you can do to add another 50 - 75hp NA I think N20 is a nice cheep easy and almost risk free way if done correctly.

An interesting question that I have thought about myself!
Actually, if kept to reasonable levels, nitrous it's a much easier, less expensive, and less trouble-prone way to reliably add HP as opposed to aftermarket turbo kits.
Let us know if you find anything. (Well, at least let ME know - I don't think you are crazy or misguided!)

I found this in the July 2003 issue of GT Purley Porsche...
NOS NO GO
The Association of German Automobile Tuners (VDAT) has warned against the fitment of aftermarket nitrous oxide injection kits. The association claims that prolonged use of NOS can lead to catastrophic engine failures, particularly at speeds easily reached on German autobahns, and that in Germany nitrous oxide is an illegal fuel because it is unable to be homologated under Germany's stringent TUV test methods.

The only thing I got out of that was 'prolonged use' which in my book means you can use it...

Well I don't plan on using it at 170+ lol!
I KNOW it has to be safe, the key is what kind of a shot is safe... <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />

back in the ricerocket days, we were always warned never to squeeze on the freeway unless you wanted to melt your heads...lol
i wouldn't go more than a sneeker bottle of nos on a porsche just to be safe. 20 shot would be good enough as this car is already fast and you just need a quick boost to hang with a turbo.

I've had nitrous on a number of cars, and my experience has generally been that the better a car is, the better its engine is, and thus the stronger and inherently more reliable it is...that said, Porsche engines are damn reliable, and the turbo cars continually prove that the factory mills can take a serious amount of massaging before having problems - confirming a serious bit of over-engineering on Porsche's part(god bless 'em)...see any of the hundreds of 600+ hp 993TTs and 996TTs on the street(s). In the end, my '78 930 lived for 40,000 miles on almost daily dosages (60hp at a time) of the bottle...I'm seriously considering spraying my 996TT. I say put some cold plugs in it, gap 'em tight, run good gas and hit it 60-100. Good luck and enjoy!

you're right about the bigger and better, but from what i heard about the regular 996 engine it can't even handle a blower what more a shot of steroids.
for what the engine costs if it blows i don't think its worth it to have a cheap thrill on the porsche. I think used engines still are around $5k if you think you can risk these expenses, better do it now and get the supercharger which at least someone has R&D'

Cool!!!!
Let me know how this goes. A 60 shot sounds like an excellent choice. I was thinking 75. Which manufacturers kit is this? I was looking into the NOS PowerFogger but it's a wet system and I'm a little afraid of that since if there was ever a backfire through the intake during nitrous injection, the entire intake manifold would blow. Dramatic but expensive!
