Question for Tip owners...
I have a 99 996 Cab. I have owned it for about 6 months and have started to notice something I didn't notice before. If I put the car in manual mode and start out in second gear the car seems to shift within second gear. There is a definate feeling of an upshift and the tac dips briefly. However the transmission light never moves up to 3 or down to 1. Is this normal? I had the dealer check the car and they said the car is "within specifications" and they did not find any fault codes. They said the car is probably reading my driving habits and creating its own shift pattern based on that info. However I only thought the car did that in automatic mode not manual mode. Any thoughts? Experiences? Thanks!

As Eric said...normal.
Other normal behavior:
Can not redline shift in the manual mode...automatic shift will occur about 300-400 rpm below redline (3rd gear shift @ about 97 mph observed at Summit Point, 3 tries).

First gear shifts at 6600 rpm and second at 6900 in manual mode . Third shifts at 7200 ( redline). GIAC sells Tiptronic reprogramming chips that are popular with the Audi crowd. There is one for the 996 Tip. I think it allows redline shifts in first two gears as well as more aggressive response to your right foot.
The rpm drop at 2000 - 3000 rpm while slowly accelerating in second gear was explained as torque convertor locking up by a service guy , if you want to believe that.
