Hey, I thought the cab was your dad's?

The dashboard switch will turn PSM off. ABS, a part of PSM, cannot be turned off. No matter what you do with the switch off, including kill yourself in a spin off to a concrete barrier, only ABS will come on and the rest of PSM will stay off.

Question

Palting,
I could be wrong (maybe I'm thinking of the ESP on my S4), but I thought even when you turned PSM off via the dash button that if it detected a "panic" reaction it would automatically turn back on?

From the Technical Service Manual...

"The system can be switched off by means of a switch in the centre console. System deactivation is displayed by the indicator lights in the PSM switch and in the instrument cluster. The ABD function (automatic brake differential) is maintained when the PSM is switched off."

You are confusing the system in the Turbo with that in the standard 996 series. The Turbo will work whenever the brakes are being used even if switched off.

Ok when I turn off PSM there's this light that comes up when I do a fishtail. Its the circle with the pointing then and an exclamation mark. How do I turn that off?

Palting, he handed me the keys <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Congratulations on moving up to a Porsche <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

The indicator light you are refering to is the PSM information indicator. With the PSM switched off, the light goes on when you fishtail to indicate that the ABS, aka ABD, is regulating the braking function. You are probably trying to fishtail with the brakes on. It is almost impossible to fishtail the 911 with the gas pedal due to the large rear tires and weight bias. But, if you have a wet road or balding tires or both, it can be done. With PSM off, gas pedal to the floor, wheel cranked all the way to one side, wet road, balding tires, NO BRAKES, you should fishtail without the indicator lights going off. You can also just crank the wheel and lift on the gas pedal at speed, and remember, NO BRAKES. And heaven help you while you're at it.

It seems silly and dangerous to do it, though. I know peer pressure and youth have something to do with it. You do want to get older, get better cars, and not die at a young age, don't you? With the stable of cars your family has, a driving or racing school should be easily affordable. You can always show up your friends by donning a full racing suit and helmet after the racing school, then sneer at anybody that challenges you, heh-heh-heh. It is also a safer and more productive way to get your jollies. I get mine at the track doing DE's .

If PSM is manually turned off, it will be reactivated for the duration of any braking. Panic or otherwise. This is true of the PSM systems on all Porsche models.

FWIW, ABS and ABD are two totally different items. Here's how Porsche defines them:

ABD (Automatic Brake Differential): A type of traction assistance which applies the brakes to a slipping wheel, transferring torque to the opposite wheel. ABD systems generally operate at lower vehicle speeds.

ABS (Antilock Brake System): A computer-controlled regulator which prevents any tire from “locking up” under braking, particularly helpful in low-traction or “panic” scenarios. Sensors keep track of each wheel’s rotation, and swiftly modulate brake fluid pressure to the caliper of any wheel that approaches lock-up. Optimizing the braking function in this way ensures that the car can still be steered under braking, regardless of the load it is carrying, within the limits of available traction. (ABS will not allow the car to defy the laws of physics; the driver must exercise due care when driving, for example, on glare ice or approaching corners.) ABS also minimizes the formation of flat spots on the tires caused when tires lock and skid.

Alright. I learned something today. Trust Viken to set the record straight.

I guess to apply to the original question, to turn PSM off and keep the indicator light from going on when you fishtail, one should turn off the switch at the dash panel, make sure the speed is above the operating limit of the "lower operating speeds" ABD (anyone know what that limit is?), don't step on the brake or you'll set off ABS, crank the steering wheel, and either floor the gas or lift off the gas. Have I got it right? I guess that's how thy do it at the skid pad in PDE?

Seems to be much ado for a little fish-tail
