This guy has a fondness for 996's
i was looking around on the web for the Hans Stuck BMW at the Ring video today and ran across this article. It has some good information about the Ring. I am sure you'll get a kick out of his fondness for the 996 at the bottom of the
article. The Stuck video is the second one, if you have never watched it, you should, very impressive. Enjoy

Congratulations,...you searched the whole wide web and found a BMW fan (yeah, a great one, but still a BMW fan) in this world who hates the 996. Only Road and Track found the 996 to be good,..oh yeah that's one objective article, but I know it does'nt take much for you guys. I bet it makes you feel superior owning a 993 now, because you sure would'nt on the track. You've got to get your kicks some how, so I really don't blame you...I am used to my mustang buddies, so you guy's are nothing new.

The new 996 is not aimed at the same demographic as before. Who can really blame Porsche for wanting to make $$$. Most folks don't want a kidney shaker for a daily driver.
When I took my bone stock 996 to the track for the first time I was SCARED. Only after updating the suspension, brakes, tires, etc does the car start to feel like a sports car. The same goes for any other mass produced car....
Above being said......just having x-74 suspension, x-51 power, LSD, and bigger brakes would drastically alter the writer's opinion.

Jeeva, get a clue!!! or a life for that matter!! Go back and re-read my post. First of all, its World Wide Web, next, the article and Stuck have no corralation and never mentioned in his article. I just stumbled across the Ring article while searching for the Haans Stuck video because I had lost the link that I have had for sometime. No matter what I own or drive whether its a 993, 996 or a dp935 any real car guy that understands what putting a car through the paces like Haans did on the Ring is quite something to watch. I dont care if he drove a BMW or VW Rabbitt, its irrelevant!! The Ring article caught my attention because it is an interesting piece of property in itself and his article had some good tips. I just found the bashing of this guys experience amusing and thought I would share it with the 996 guys and most would find humor in it also, not take it to heart, little did I know some little person with a small ego got his feelings hurt by an author of an article that took a tired Hertz 996 rental that had probably seen most of its abused, under maintained life on the Ring and was not what he expected and wrote about it. I'm sure you wont even view Haan's video because he used a BMW to set the bar. Jeeva, i could care less what you lease, I love all Porsche's and I have NEVER been biased of who drives whatever 3 digit designator following the great name of Porsche. They are all great in their own way.

I don't know what gotten in to me last night, I am sorry for my behaviour. I have watched Hans Stuck's video several times (it's been posted before), and respect him for his obvious talent. His immature comments got me ticked, and then I see that most of your posts were in the 993 board (it's the 993 guy's in the past who always want to pick a fight here) and this being one of the few or your first post on this forum, I thought you were another troll from the 993 board. The thumbs up sign (which is now the light bulb sign) with your title did'nt help much either. It's no excuse, so i apologise.
But, sorry man I still don't find the humor in these comments, I don't know whether anyone here would?
................."The steering has almost no feedback whatsoever. The suspension, while very good over the bumps, has the more of the feeling of a touring car than a sports car. The steering used to be the high point of the 911, and now it's completely unremarkable. Booo."...................
............................"Listen, if you own a 996 and you're really rather fond of it, then by all means you may conclude one of the following:
Our car was a complete anomaly, probably built by trolls in a cave somewhere, and all other 996s are just as awesome as Road & Track says they are.
The mileage/abuse of rental life in Germany made the interior, exterior, suspension, steering, ABS, traction control, and brakes somehow perform like those of a 10-year-old Mercedes wagon.
I was smoking crack the entire time and have no idea what I am talking about1. Go directly to rehab. Do not collect $200.
I don't want to rain on the parade, but I think that anyone who takes an objective look at this car for what it truly is cannot say that it deserves to wear the Porsche badge. Sure, it's comfy and quiet and has a nice stereo and gets reasonable gas mileage and holds groceries, but if that's what you want, go buy a Mercedes. The 996 is a tragedy. I guess this is what you get from a company that quits LeMans racing to concentrate on building an SUV."....................

Well, I read the article and everything he said is quit true for the 996. But regardless what he said the 996 motor is smoother, faster, handles better, and rides more comfortable than the 993. From the technical standpoint Porsche did everything right, built a car that performs better than the previous generation. And this time around they did it with less money and decided to pocket the change.
Oh! forgot to mention the 996 is also much easier to maintain than the previous generations, just wish they would have used better harness connectors.....
FWIW, I enjoy both cars very much. Although I do get a lot more look in my 993 than the 996, maybe is has to do with the fact that my 993 is red.
P.S. the clank sound he mention with the door closing have nothing to do with how strong the door is, it is the striking mechanism in the doors of the older generation 911s that's 100% responsible for creating that sound. The races cars with the fiber glass doors makes that same sound when you close them... so....... And I don't know why everyone is always putting down the interior material of the 996, the older 911s is not much better either, also all plastic. Actually I enjoy the interior of the 996 quit much, I thought it looks nice and it comes apart easily, just snap them in.

Guys, haven't any of you here rented a great car brand only to be shocked by what a piece of s--t the particular car was? From what I read in that article this fellow rented a real lemon. The exact same thing happened to me in Las Vegas once, only I took it back in 30 minutes (would of been less time without traffic) and didn't write a rant on a forum about it!
This is no way representative of an actual 996....if he really wanted to help he should have posted the name of the rental company so we can avoid them like the plague.

Jeeva, apologies accepted and i apolgize also for being rude in my reply. Trust me, there was no intention to start any trouble. Like i said i love them all, i dont care what Porsche you drive and i dont do that model wedge at all. i just got a kick out this guy badgering a rented worn out 996 and I thought others would too, it wasnt the car as my focus, but the author being so obnoxious. Yes, i went back and changed the thumbs up, thinking people were justifying that as starting trouble. Not the case. Like I said earlier, Stuck and that author had no ties, I just went ahead and posted the video after i found it just in case anybody had not seen it yet. Yes, I love the Stuck video, I know its wasnt a Porsche he used, but what talent.
Cheers
Cheers

Who cares.....
Here's what counts to me....
The 996
- is Lighter (than the 964 & 993)
- has More HP
- has More Torque
- is More Rigid
- has a stronger Chassis
- Accelerates more quickly
- Has a higher top speed
- Brakes more quickly
- Pulls more G's on a skidpad
- Slaloms Faster
- Autocrosses better
- is quicker on a road course
- is quicker around the "Ring" (the ultimate road course)
- looks better (my opinion)
- is safer in a crash
- Sold in higher numbers (more popular)
- is more comforable
- has a better interior
- has won almost unanimous aclaim from the Automotive press worldwide
- is less maintenance intensive
........than the 911's before it (Turbo vs. Turbo, N.A. vs. N.A.)
I have had the pleasure of driving multiple early 911's, 964's, and 993's (I truly love them all and if I had Seinfeld's wealth I too would have a garage full) but the 996 is better than any before IMO
If some moldy figs can't get over the fact that it is water-cooled and it's doors don't "clunk" right etc, etc, etc.........I can live with that. The narrow opinions of others can't spoil my fun!!!

I am always amused by comments made against the 996 like it does not have the right feel and that sort of thing. From a guy who is on his fifth Porsche I believe this to be BS.
Oh yes one more thing. The 996 I have sounds much better than the 964, not that this is important of course.
Ciao,
Adrian
