I do have the Porsche M030 option, but on the mountain roads around where I live the 996 handles them better and faster. My 964 is highly modified including the 285HP Sportec engine upgrade, but the engine does not deliver like the 996 does.
I am always amused by comments made against the 996 like it does not have the right feel and that sort of thing. From a guy who is on his fifth Porsche I believe this to be BS.
Oh yes one more thing. The 996 I have sounds much better than the 964, not that this is important of course.

Thanks Adrian!! I also love the sound (especially w/PSE)!! I like the older 911 sounds also, but the M96's in my 986 and 996 sound really good!!

The guy writing that review of the 996 has zero credibility. He says "The steering has almost no feedback whatsoever.", and that he' rather drive a 3 series around the track than a 996.

I've had enough BMW's (two 3 series currently), and I've spent enough time in M3's to know that none of them holds a candle to a 996 in steering feel. Not even close. Not even in the same ballpark.

He also complains about the traction control being obtrusive, yet Porsche's system is widely hailed as one of the least obtrusive systems out there, and can be partially defeated. Again, the traction control on a 3 series kicks in far more aggressively than it does on a 996.

This guy is clueless; either because he doesn't know what he's talking about, or because he didn't recognize that the 996 he drove wasn't right.

I haven't read all the posts here, but when I saw rental I knew exactly why that guy had a bad experience: 40k rental miles. The 911's that get rented in europe are most oftened rented by Russian mafia types and wealthy eastern europeans, and they TRASH the cars (been told this by a few different rental agencies in Germany, and when I rented a 996 with only about 10k miles, you could tell those were 10k HARD miles.

Yes and visitors from other lands who take them around the Nürburgring or even enter them in local autocross/slalom events. Using a rental car with 40k miles to use as a guide and to comment on the series and brand says more about the motives of the commentator than the car.
I rented an alleged vintage 911RS (1973) once and it was awful to drive. I found out just how badly the rental 911 was set up when I drove another some time later that belonged to let us say a fanatical collector. That 911RS was beautiful to behold and to drive.

The problem with criticsms of that type is that they are irrefuutable snce they are 100% subjective.

This when the credibility, knowledge and experience of the person who says such things comes into play along with why they are saying it, and even why they are posted to the forums in the first place.
I have been doing this longer than most and I have seen every model of Porsche attacked from outside and from within albeit some more than others. In fact it was these attacks on the 964 series years ago provided part of the motivation to write my first book.
