Post C2 vs. C4

I am new here. Why do some prefer the C4 over C2?
This is not a winter car and AWD usually is a heavier car.

Just my opinion, but for driving in the real world, I'll never buy another sports car that is not AWD for its ability to better handle odd road conditions.

..thought the CS4 understeers more than a C2!

Well, for the fun factor a C2 is a much higher other than the challenge itself.. especially when you manage to have your side window as your main windshield... (heheheh, got it?!)

C4 just grips! (not fun?! you decide!)

Yup it is heavier.

I bought the c4 because I was blown away by the amazing tracking ability (especially in the rain and snow) of the audi quattro my bride owns. If I want to experience swapping ends, my 928 will do that with very little encouragement. I was looking for something that would handle like it was on rails. I was not dissapointed, but that is just me.........

A 928 is a pretty damn stable car (front engine and rear tranny gives a very higher polar moment of inertia). I don't think it's an accident that all of Porsche's best performing models are RWD: Carrera GT, GT2, GT3.

Not suggesting that a '28 is not a "damn stable car", however 330 ponies to 2 tires plays different that 300 to 4 tires. Plus a '28 can be a torquey b**ch.......

Standing on her while changing directions can result in multiple variations. A C4 pretty much goes where it is pointed.....

Gretch - I agree that with that torquey V8, the rear can be made to step out rather easily. I happen to love that aspect of a RWD car (happens less in a rear-engined car under throttle because the rear weight keeps the car planted), but I find AWD cars lacking excitement in that department. I guess that's why Porsche makes both AWD and RWD, so we can both be happy ;-)

Having owned both... 3 reasons I prefer the C4:

1) Style, panache, whatever. With so many C2's around my parts, the C4 is definitely more unique.

2) Neutral handling. It's more than "just grips", or the security that comes from "stability". It's the way the car feels in its responsiveness. Agreed, if fun is countersteer and the skill it takes to never lift during a turn, then the C2 is more fun. But a C4 is a blast - every day, every turn, every road condition, every mood.

3) Heritage. Porsche AWD was first introduced with the 959, then the C4, and THEN the turbo. Not bad company.

a few points for the C2:

- The C2 is actually faster in straight line acceleration (less drivetrain hp loss).

- Here in Southern California, it's spring time all year long. No snow and hardly any rain essentially makes AWD useless for street driving.

Maybe its because I have the RoW M030 and 18" wheels on my C4, but its every bit as fun. And "more grip" is good in my book, it allows you to take the car further with greater safety in the street conditions, rain, gravel, oil, etc.

Are these not fun? Lancia Delta Integrale, Subaru WRC Sti, Mitsu Lancer Evo VII, 959, Lambo Diablo VT, Murcielago...

Anyway the differences in grip, performance, handling, tec b/w a C2 and the viscous-coupling differential AWD C4 are not that great. Its not like Audi's Torsen differential AWD system... boring

You make a good point, Carlos! And those cars are fun, but not quite as fun as:

Carrera RSR 2.8, GT3, Carrera GT, Ferrari Enzo, and McLaren F1, etc. ;-)

Guess there are things that are a lot more important in wether a sportcar is fun than just RWD/AWD such as engine, transmition, suspension, steering, chasis, etc.

Technically the C2 is 0.1 seconds faster to 60 but, come one, will anyone actually be able to notice that, I certainly can't. They feel pretty equal in straight line acceleration but, obviuosly, the C4S has the ultimate grip. Just my .02

I think it comes down to personal preference. 4wd is great in wet or bad weather, or if you have a ton of hp, but in most cases I just don't see the benifit. A C4s weighs 220lbs more than a C2 Coupe; I like lighter personally. Any of the "understeer" differences are based on the suspension, tire differences and can be adjusted pretty easly.

Buy the one you like more, you cannot go wrong with either car
