Exclamation Odd smell

Here's a weird one: When I turn off the engine I detect a sort of sweet, almost syrupy smell coming from the engine. This just startedabout a week ago. I can't detect any smoke. It doesn't smell like clutch or burning oil or coolant or rubber. Any body have any idea what the hell I'm talking about!?

sweet smell most likely is boiled off coolant. Doesn't necessarily mean you have a leak, the overflow system does allow for some evaporation....

Yep if it is sweet it would indicate coolant. You might note what your temp was, what year etc, as it could be nothing but it could be a cracked coolant tank that is a TSB.

Yup...one of 2 things - leaking or cracked coolant tank..or in my case a bad water pump(replaced under warranty).

Coolant? Water pump? I must have made a wrong turn somewhere.

Coolant temperatures are held at about 180 to 190F during operation but once you shut the engine down the coolant temperatures will begin to rise, sometimes high enough to begin to boil over even with the coolant system pressure held below sea level.

Many modern day cars have a thermostatic switch that will close the electric cooling fan circuit when this happens to prevent the boilover.

Don't know if the 996 has this feature or not but it may be worth checking.

Also, it very well could be that one of the electric cooling fans has failed but forward motion provides enough cooling until you stop.
