Talking 10 Minute Head Unit Swap Out

In case anyone wants to know, the Metra VW/Audi Bose 93-Up harness (#70-1787) is a perfect fit for the '01 996 with HiFi upgrade (Becker CDR 220 is the stock headunit). With this I was able to install an Alpine headunit in my car in about 10 minutes (including splicing together the adapter harness and the radio's harness) without cutting a single wire from the existing, in-car, harness.

Just thought I would share since I couldn't find this information anywhere online.

Not sure. But if you call the support line at Metra they will tell you what will fit. Then all you have to do isdo a search on Google for the part number to see who sells it online.

(I got mine from soundcity.com and shipping was very fast).

I can tell you it's not nearly as simple with an 04! 03 brought about the introduction of the MOST optical interface and with that came the end of "head unit swaps" as we know them. The short answer is you cant change that head unit without rewiring every speaker in that car to a new amplifier with new wiring to the new head unit... not a small undertaking!

Thank you very much for the information. I wish I had found this a few months ago....I should have searched harder. I may still put it to use!

Default Which Alpine head unit did you fit?

Thanks for your info.

I have wanted to do the simple swap for a long time. Local Car Toys shop (in Renton, WA) said it will need some stuff to change the voltage (or something) to high (or something) because my car has a black box (Amp? or something) in the front trunk. Basically they can't just do a simple swap no matter which head unit....? Not really believe what they said, I walked away.

Just wondering which head unit did you installed? I just want something with mp3 player from Alpine. My car is a 2002 996 with CDR-220

Thanks in advance.

I had a new alpine head unit installed in my '99. It took the place of the cr-220. It took the folks at Best Buy about 3 hours to do it. They had to bypass the existing amp. I have the alpine unit with XM radio and the Ipod hook-up. Both work great but now I am realizing that I don't have enough bass. So, the subwoofer may be the next install.

I bought the Alpine CDA-9856 and since I had the correct harness I was able to use the stock amp with any problems. It sounds much better and I love the iPod interconnect. Unfortunately, the radio reception is still pretty lousy. Better than before but still lousy. I can only guess that the antenna booster is shot or there is a bad connection...btw, does anyone know where the antenna booster is mounted?

Hey jeff_c - I'm installing an Alpine unit in my 99 996 too. Same set-up you look to have done. How difficult is it to remove the OEM head unit?

I already have the Metra harness and fast Ipod cable.
Thanks Glenn

It takes about 2 seconds if you have that 2-piece Porsche Radio Removal Tool Without it it might take a bit longer since you will need to fabricate your own.

They are all over ebay and I think someone posted a DIY version somewhere on here.

Good luck with your install.

You can see what I did here:

Yet another stereo upgrade...

I discuss the wiring a bit further down the thread.

Does the new head unit work in conjuction with the hi-fi unit in the center console or does it override it?
Also, where did you buy the harness?

Thanks

It is not a 2 min swap if you have the Hifi. It's a lot harder because of the amp.

If you need a wire harness for the 996 you can use 1986-up volkswagen (vw01b)

You can pick one up at Best Buy.

You can remove the center console if you don't have the special tool. It allowes you to get to the back of the radio
