I've had an 86 944 Turbo for quite some time and do love it, but have always wanted a convertible. I'm considering a 1999 996 cabriolet but wanted to see if any current 996 owners out there own or have owned a 944 turbo and can compare the experiences of owning both cars. Any advice with what to look for in a used 996 would be greatly appreciated.
I have had a 85 944 cab and now currently own a 996 cabriolet, and let me tell you that there is absolutely nothing to compare. Like apples and oranges
I had an '88 944 turbo for about 7 years.
I have a 996 coupe, so I can't comment on
the cab.
The 996 has a much friendlier torque curve
with no turbo lag. You lose the
sudden turbo rush, but the 996 is a much
easier car to drive in day-to-day traffic.
The 996 brakes are better. The steering
is somewhat better. You will notice the
rear-end weight bias of the 996. Obviously
the 996 has a lot more HP (~300 vs. ~220
if I remember correctly).
Have you considered a late model 968. 996 is a wonderful vehicle but cab version is butt ugly with the top up, looks ODD even with the top down. Okay with optional HT.
