I am a life-long car crazy type. During my youth, I could not make cars go fast enough to suit me.

In the past two years, I have hit 140 mph only once and it was all impluse.

Actually, 100 mph makes me a little uncomfortable.

So, does anyone else feel this way about speed? I still love the quick aceleration, but anything above 100 mph makes me nervous.

Maybe I have turned into a wimp or does anyone else feel this way?

On the autobahn last year I was quite comfortable at 130MPH and above, across South Dakota and Montana 90 to 100 felt fine.

It used to be that at night I could/would over-drive my headlamps without a thought to the danger, I attribute that to being stupid then, not wimpy now.

If being afraid there's a cop with Radar just around the next bend makes me a wimp then get the labeller out.

Looking forward to the next trip to Europe, pick up a VW Toureg this time.

Hit 106 today in the P-car, which was exactly 4K RPM in 6th gear....man I want to get this thing broken in!!

Skydivers correct me if I'm wrong, but if you jump off an airplane, your terminal velocity is 120 mph. Friction and what-not won't letyou go faster. There must be something instictive/intuitive about that 120 mph barrier that strikes a self-preservation instinct in all of us (or should I say most of us). Anyway, it is not the speed that will kill you, it's the stop .

Hey Palting,

You're almost right. Terminal velocity in freefall is about 120 mph for what we call a "normal" (flat) body-position. Now, there are many many other positions, and on a full dive, speed can be MUCH higher.

BTW, if you haven't tried it yet, do it! Freefall just can't be explained. It has to be experienced... (FYI, I have over 3'200 jumps and retired from international competition 2-3 years ago. But that's getting off-topic...)

It depends on the location:

On the track I don't get nervous at any speed.

On I-75 Alligator Alley we kept it at 120-125 and did not exceed that because I hadn't broke the car in (&lt;2000 mi) and had to keep the rpm below 4200. Otherwise who knows how fast I'd have gone.

On I-95 about 130 is tops mainly because I know my license and is toast and I might be incarcerated.

In school zones it's definitely nerve racking at 80.

For the authorities patrolling these forums, all numbers are of course km/hr.

You arent being a wimp. I think it is the mature thing to do.

I am not worry about my driving skills nor the car but the folks who drive near me. These folks makes me nervous and plus if you are approaching them over 100mph. You will have a nasty accident so only time I let it rip is when I SEE A NICE CLEAR ROAD. Any hint of traffic and back down to 80.

Driving fast doesnt mean driving dumb. Chances are one day, someone is going to cut you off and that has happen a tons I am sure. It is hard for someone to tell either you are passing them at 80 or 140. So, no speeding when folks around. Let the dumbass kids do it.

I do not get nervous at speed... I get nervous of other drivers while at speed.

The roads around me suck, anything over 100mph feels like a roller coaster ride. I try to save my speed records for the track, much safer for myself, my licence, and others around me.

On an empty highway I don't get nervous at speed but with traffic around you just never know. On those rare occasions where I was able to hold highly illegal speeds for any length of time my only nervousness was the thought of the speeding ticket, not the speed itself.

You're not being wimpy though. Nothing wrong with self preservation.

about 175 on a section of closed brand new interstate the evening before it opened. The crazy thing was that it was in a truck! My old Dakota, basically like the new R/T except fitted with alot of Viper parts. 400 hp at the wheels. Took it out and just accelerated until it had no more and let it wind down. Covered about 6 miles VERY fast! It was suprisingly comfortable at speed. I had had it up to 160 once before racing an M3. Was so much fun to watch him in my rear view mirror. In my Porsche... don't laugh, about a 115 at Pocono, maybe 105 on the street when I first got it. I've shyed away from going fast on the street as I've gotten wiser. Keep it on the track. Hoping to get the new car soon and get some faster track speeds. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I feel the same as ohsixx. Driving smoothly and quickly on public roads up to about 80 seems right to me. The occasional run to triple digits on isolated or lightly traveled sections of interstate are good for a little rush, but my life and license are more important to do that very much, especially in a contest. Most people have no idea of how fast things can happen at speed because they do not drive fast most of the time. It would not take much debris to ruin your day if you hit it at speed. I am not talking about stationary debris, but stuff that is thrown up by cars in front. I like to run with other Carreras on the road, but not race. If you drive a 996 you know how many people challenge you, but what is the point of responding to every challenge? You also know that the police love to single out Porsches. The guy in the hot pickup has a lot more latitude as far as the police are concerned, so let him go. Perhaps I am a wimp. I'd much rather take on challengers in the ring than in cars.

AndrewP, I agree with the 80mph thing. Anything faster around traffic is just dangerous, because other drivers are not always as skilled as us. Besides it seems that 80 is the sweet spot for my Carrera. I save the high, high speed for the track.

By the way, nice to meet you the other day at the dealership, AndrewP. Your car is beautiful.
