Post Comparison of racing tires on a GT3...

In this month's issue of the German car magazine, "Sport Auto", an article reported on a comparison test on a GT3 between four different racing tires allowed for street usage: Dunlop Super Sport Race, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup, Pirelli P Zero Corsa and Yokohama Advan 048. The test was conducted on the Hockenheim race track.

Result: The Yokohama tire was the most precise but also the most difficult to drive. The Dunlop tire was the tamest and the slowest. The Michelin was judged to be the best tire for the GT3, showing excellent balance, closely followed by the Pirelli.
Lap times: (28 degrees C)
Dunlop - 1.18,8 min
Michelin - 1.17,7 min
Pirelli - 1.18, 1 min
Yokohama - 1.18,5 min

Tire pressure set after heating up the tires for 4 rounds: 2,4 bar front, 2,8 bar back.

Phil, did the article mention the rim sizes and tire sizes that they used in the test? What is the pounds equivalent on the pressures for us US guys. Thanks.

Cool

Is it true that the Michelins should be at approx 200 degrees surface temp hot? I could not get mine past 180 degrees this week at Limerock. If I want to get the temp up, would you normally increase or decrease tire pressure?

Ed.

One would normally reduce air pressure to raise
the temperature.(more flex)

The article quoted 70 degrees Celsius (158 Farenheit) as the correct temperature.

Phil,

Are those factory recommended pressures for the GT3 or should the GT3 also use 36 and 44 as per the other cars?

Radar,
The recommendations were made in the article and reflect track usage. Whether the manufacturer recommended these for their racing tires was not stated.
Edward,

I have run the Pilot Sports at the Glenn and Lime Rock. I was told by a reliable person that they are the best at 32-34lbs HOT. I have not tried them at higher pressure but at the Glenn they were within 1/2 second of the times that I was turning with Hoosiers. I was running the pilots at 34lbs all around.
