750 to a grand for oil filter/oil change and air filter change is total theivery.
You can do it yourself for $65 oil + oil filter. You can get a k&n high flow air filter for $80 bucks, it is a simple job to change it.

$105.69 for my 1997 Boxster 30k service - same as your 996 - but I did it myself. Plugs are good for 60k so subtract $30.00. Jeff

I don't work for a dealer, but I resent the implication that dealers are theives.
Dealers have a tremendous amount of capital invested in equipment, property, training of employees and have to work in a competitive market as well as conforming to Porsche AG franchise regulations.
For instance the Porsche PST2 tester is a $10000 investment, Porsche will send special tools and the dealer has to pay for them.
The dealer has to offer a wide range of services and deal with warranty work (which may or may not be re-imbursed by the factory).
While some charges could be argued as unreasonable, Porsche publish a list of factory labor times which the dealer has to abide by.
A 30k service is not just changing the oil and
filter, just check the warranty/service book to confirm. This is what it takes to run a Porsche nowadays.
I'm sure we could call a lot of other businesses theives, (computer software consultants come to mind) but sweeping generalisations with no factual basis only belong on "60 minutes" or political adverts.

Well, I find myself agreeing with GMS. While $750 is high, I don't have the testers or the ability to get the car on a lift to look at the things that matter. It is more than just changing the oil, I do that myself at PCA tech seeions. The book says that a 30k service should take 6 to 8 hours. If you look at your service book they tell you the items that need to be checked. There is always the issue of did they really do the work, but you have to have a sense that the place you choose to do your work is honest.

If dealers are the good guys, then will someone please outline what you get for $750-1000 in a 30K service interval???

Yes everyone has operating costs, but c'mon man, 1K for easy stuff? Warranty repairs come with the territory, so do 3% FACTORY HOLDBACKS!!!

How did you coem with the dealer's service. Do you think it was worth it. Usually when I go to the dealer they will handle a recalled item or replace something that is covered under warranty. This always confirms my support in going to them.

So the service ended up costing just under $700.00. They also replaced the mass air sensor and the radiator cap under warranty. I know that I could have saved some bucks on the parts and labor for the oil change but the other items they inspect give me peace of mind since they found these problems and fixed them. I also have documented records now for the next person that will own this car someday

I just had my car serviced at the dealer for it's 15k service. They replaced the air mass sensor under warranty and fixed a fuse problem that I had. There is piece of mind in having the records from the dealer. Thx for the update.
