I had the same thing and needed to have the filler tube replaced. I couldn't fill the tank at all when it happened to me though. Were you able to fill the tank? If so, it may have been something else.

FWIW, I learned the hard way not to "top off" when filling the tank. Same thing happens as you describe

Same here. No more "topping off" the tank for me after an overflow during first refill.

I topped off once, it took the emissions system a week to get back to normal. These cars are VERY sensitive about doing that.

In your case there was prolly a little more gas in the pump handle than should have been and it effectivly "topped" off the tank. If you pump real slow, it is possible to overrun the tank limit without having the pump shut itself off.

I learned that onece topping off my Tahoe (which you can do), the result was a stream of gas on the ground without the pump switching off......
