start in 2nd gear?
My friend told me that on a 911 you should start in 2nd gear when starting from a complete stop... I dont drive like this, but is what he says true?

For a manual, wouldn't starting from 2nd gear be harder on the clutch? It was always my assumption (and we all know what happens when I assume) that starting in 2nd gear was primarily to improve fuel efficiency.

My triptronic starts in 2nd gear. Anyone know why? I noticed it and have manually put it in 1st on occasion at slow speeds, but the RPMs seem to rise quickly necessitation a switch to 2nd gear.

Auto trannies do it to avoid slipping in wet weather and to get better mileage...if you floor it is should start off in first. In a manual its best to get things started in first since you don't have a torque converter.

I would think that starting out in 2nd gear with a manual tran would result in lugging the engine thus most certainly being the stupidest thing you could do to your engine.
