Post Above 170mph..

I posted this on the Horns Failure but I think i ought to make it an issue! here goes:

..and btw why is it so hard to go above 275km in the car? is it coz both the windows and roof were open?
After 270, every extra 1km/hr took about 1km to achieve..

BWahhahhahahaah, yeah Waz try closing the sunroof and windows, 3 giant holes in the car will slow it down quite a bit. I hit 130 in my 911SC with the sunroof open, then shut it and it sped up a good 4 mph right off the bat and slowly kept accelerating until an indicated 140mph (probably around 135 in reality though, because my 20 year old speedo is off a few mph at that speed) I had to let off because traffic was getting pretty close pretty fast.

Russ,
My new year resolution was finally decided: to hit 285km/h. Please dont talk me out of it, I'm aware of the consequences and I even started to buy myself a new gear for the purpose.. It's a bit tight but it's all for the cause. Here's me in the wind tunnel:

Well here is an interesting quote from Autozine realted to this:

"Drag is proportional to the drag coefficient, frontal area and the square of vehicle speed. You can see a car travelling at 120 mph has to fight with 4 times the drag of a car travelling at 60 mph. You can also see the influence of drag to top speed. If we need to raise the top speed of Ferrari Testarossa from 180 mph to 200 mph like Lamborghini Diablo, without altering its shape, we need to raise its power from 390 hp to 535 hp. If we would rather spend time and money in wind tunnel research, decreasing its Cd from 0.36 to 0.29 can do the same thing."

Opening the windows and roof has an incredible effect on drag, so much so that gas consumption may increase up to 10-20% due to the drag increase. Just the design of the mirrors can influence 2-3mph at top speed. Just look at the smaller size of the mirrors and narrower body than the 996TT of my favorite Porsche; the Ruf R Turbo (top speed 213mph/348kmh with 520HP).

294Km/h (180mph) with just my regular 996C4 with aerokit thanks to a slight downhill, so... any downhills in Nigeria? <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

One problem...lose the blue gloves.

I think this issue could be an extension of the clear light lens issue. You should have clear gloves...

Happy New Year all!

BUT seriously, at this constant rpm and engine load, is it safe to keep the rpm's at that speed for so long? that's what i was afraid of: a POOOFF!!! in the back of my car.. so i eased on the accelarator..

How safe is it?

No downhills in Nigeria! Remember it's originally a lagoon area that was mostly reclaimed.. so all is level and straight, except when you go inwards, you get some nice and smooth curves, you can stay around 170-200km/h for about 10 minutes, very fascinating!

..which is where am just coming from now! <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

*craig: am doing body adjustments to fit the skis and the sticks in the car..!*

I'm sure there is always a chance it will go "POOOF" but I think its very unlikely, and if its going to it will end up doing it anyway with time. I've keept the car between 6-7000 RPM in the highway for longer periods of time like 30-45min many times and not a simgle problem. Now if you don´t take good care of its maintenance or do some heavy modifications then...

Its not only german, its Porsche

Talking about some heavy modifications, a fellow P-owner here (996TT) has a Mini Cooper TURBO on order which will come with 200HP now (not the current 163HP "S" version which is already one of the best handling and most agile cars out there), but the best part is that he already has in his garage a performance kit made by Cooper (England) for this future Turbo version that will pump the HP to 260HP aprox!!! thats 260HP on a kart-like Mini!!!. I'll let you know if I get a chance of trying it.

Cool

Waz (re: your picture on Skis),

Are you practicing for balancing yourself on your 996 roof transport system?

going top end with the windows down and
sun roof open does make a big huge difference.
a stock corvette with his top down
caught up to me while I had all three open
from 100 when I had at least 100 feet lead on him in my 00 996 C2. This was a modified 996 with 340+hp.

By the time i hit 135mph he was passing me
at least 145mph. Funny thing is I realized the drag was making my car look weaker than it is, I tried to hit the auto close button on all of them, and either things were happening so fast, or the autoclose feature doesn't work at speeds over 110mph.

Finally I caught up when he slowed for traffic, got the windows closed, ran head to head from 90mph to 140, this time with the windows closed, I edged him with at least a 3 car length start.

Shows how much the windows can cause drag.

what's the conversion for your top end at 289kmph? I hit 166mph on my gauge going up a slight uphill, but with tire conversion of my bigger 19's I asume I came close to 170mph.

It seemed like every 1 mile per hour on the guage was taking 3-5 seconds after 160mph, so basically to get to 170 from 160 it took close to 1 min.

Carlos

looking at the picture of your windscreen with all the splattered bugs I was reminded of the old joke:

Q - What's the last thing that goes through a bug's mind when he hits the windscreen?

A - His ***!

Happy New Year <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />
