Engine Check often "ON"

Engine Check often "ON"
I have a'99 996 with full Gemballa bodykit. Problem that i have with this car is the engine light always turn on.
The last time the engine light turn "on" is 2 months ago, and the car was sitting in the dealer for almost a week. They said that the oil is leaking from my transmission and have to be repair.
now, the engine check is lit again, and my warranty almost experied. It a common problem happening in 996?
Do you think any one can refer me to inexpensive realible mechanic or is it better for me to buy an extended warranty from dealer (expensive).
I am located in long beach area (California) and
my car had only 21000 mi.

I would check your paperwork from the last time your car was in the shop. Most likely the check engine light and the leak were not related. The leak is a common problem with the 99s and it's good that you got it fixed.
The CE light is most likely an O2 sensor which should only take an hour or two to fix. I was told last fall that Porsche was coming out with fix for this problem. Maybe some of the warm weather folks have already had it done and can fill us in.

Sorry to hear about the problems. If it's the main rear seal leaking on your '99, then it's a well known problem, but not a cause for your check engine light. I think there was a TSB out about the gas cap seal, or something similar. Ask your dealer about that as I think that causes the check engine light. With regard to SoCal dealer service departments, Newport Auto Center, Russ Mann, has always taken good care of me. By reputation, Circle Imports right in Long Beach is supposed to have an excellent service department. No experience with them, just heard about it from more than one source. Good Luck!

Agree with Jim B. Check engine light on my car has always been related to either the MassFlow or O2 sensor. Last time the dealer replaced the Mass Flow unit. As they pointed out to me, the check engine light is yellow meaning the car should be driveable with no damage for a short time. Also, most Porsche warranties are from the date of the repair and not the delivery date.

I had a '99 C2 cab and towards the end, before I traded it it for an '02 cab, the check engine light went on about a half hour after I bought gas and went off a few days later (the car was a daily driver). And, I had the new gas cap which was a common warranty item on this model.

FIFTY cycles???
My check engine decided to make an appearance last week after I'd left the car in the garage for a week (my fault - drive the thing!!). I'd just taken the car for a leasurely drive and it came on.
The gas cap seems fine, but I did notice that my oil dipstick was slightly out - I pushed it firmly back in - presumably this is enough to cause the problem??
My dealer told me to keep driving the car for at least THREE cycles and then see if it goes out. Of course, it didn't and I'm probably still only up to 10 or so cycles. However, there's a big difference between 3 and 50!
Can any give me a definitive view on this??
