The TT will smoke the SL55 in just about every category, except maybe ride comfort. Speed,0 to 60, 1/4 mile, cornering, etc..
Merry Christmas!!!

Its fairly clear, look at the numbers,
The 476HP SL55 toasts the 996 in acceleration.
The 990lbs lighter and sportier suspension 996 toasts the SL55 in handling/grip.
So it depends were the race is. If its a drag race I'd wnat to be in the SL55. If its in a twisty road or track I'd want to be in the 996.
If its in a high-speed highway I'd probably still want to be in the 996 (besides the SL55 has its speed limited to 250Km/h and are to new for it to be tampered with because will void waranty

I've had the opporunity to ride in both. The SL55 has insane power, I mean it's absolutely breathtaking and with the blower giving a little bit of whine under full acceleration and the exhaust barking with the top down it's an awesome feeling. The 911 turbo however is a bit more low key and gets the job done with less aggravation and hoopla. The SL has too much mass to lug around to be anywhere near the Porsche in the twisties but hit a straightaway and the *** just plants and the car FLIES

Here are the 0-60 and 1/4 times for both according to C&D.
-and also the quickest factory Benz we've ever tested: 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, 0 to 100 in 10.9, the quarter-mile in 13 seconds flat at 110 mph.
This was info from a 2001 issue regarding the 996
-more powerful 911 Carrera coupe sprints to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds — 0.2 second quicker than the current one.
I think If I remember correctly it is more like 0-60 in 4.9 but i might be wrong. You will obviously be able to out handle the SL55 because it weighs about as much as an SUV. The 0-60 will be a close driver’s race. I am assuming you are referring to a 996 c2 not a turbo? Hope that helps.

Does this mean that our 996 can catch up with him @ 280km/hr on long highway or it will be too late???

I not sure I understood the question, but if I were in the autobahn for example I will bet on the 996, because just the 250Km/h speed limiter on the SL is a serious handicap. Also depends on the traffic because if there is a lot of traffic, the constant break-acceleration is going to favor the SL. But if the highway is not a straight line with traffic then you will gain so much on him on the long curves and breaking that he will not be able to compensate with just aceleration. Just like racing a superbike (right Waz?
)
I don't think that once you pass him your going to pull away very fast but you will be overall faster.
I had a similar encounter with a BMW 850CSI(370HP) and I was in a E36-M3 (286HP) I encountered on the highway, I flashed my lights from behind, he floored it and there we went, he was fast acelerating but he just could not corner that heavy car the way I could the agile M3 so even with much less horsepower my car would draw him closer with each breaking and cornering until I was able to pass him by gaining much more momentum comming out of one of the tighter bends of the highway, it was fun seeing my less powerfull M3 pulling up beside him and passing him on the acceleration on the straight out of the curve, he didn´t expect it. Afterwards when he caught up on the stop light at the end of the highway he gave me a smile and the "thumb ups" y replied and each went our own way back home after work.
I think the same applies with the 996/SL55. The SL55 is all power (150HP more and loads and loads of torque) but in real life situations the weight of the car (an incredible 450Kg more!!) and softer suspension settings for cruisin' is a more decisive factor.
The 996 has clearly the upper hand in everything except a drag race (though similar 0-60's, the SL is also automatic so its much easier to launch too) or shier acceleration in a straight line.

Fadz,
Considering:
- The long stretches in dubai with intermittent radar stops *I miss their cute flahses!*
- Not having enough time to go beyond 250km/hr to make up for your disadvantage
- Non availability of curves or alpine twists, *you live in a desert, damn it!*
- Carlos's beefy explanation on how birds and bees copulate
You're in for the following choices:
1) Buy a TT coz I just learned you chatted with my wife and invited her to Dubai on February.. I'll come over and surely trade is accpeted!!! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
2) Buy a Zonda if you are looking for the ultimate performance car
3) Accept the fact that there are actually cars that go faster than you *except in this country where I can easily declare I am the fastest coz even if there were, the weed driving it doesnt know what's under his bonnet*

You can have the speed limiter removed at the dealer as my friend had that done before he took delivery, now the cars top speed is 192 mph.

Had the pleasure of smoking a friend's SL55 in my GT2. It was NOT close, though I shut it down at 110 or so all three times we tried it. One was a standing start. Other two were 20 MPH starts. Obviously not scientific, but I know which car I'd take if there was a gun to my head. I believe SL55 will beat a stock 996, but not a 996TT,
My experience with the SL55 is that it is very very fast. But it feels faster than it is because you are dealing with so much mass. I've read some reports of MB tweaking the SL55's they used to originally go up against Porsche and other sports car makers to make the times sound more competitive.
A 996 TT should always win in 0-60 and on any track or any road. It is possible that the MB might win in a 100-180 test due to its excellent aerodynamics.
No matter what MB does to the SL it will never drive like a Porsche. Unless they chop about 1200 lbs off of it.
Beautiful machine however. Looks great with the top up and down.
