X51 vs. 01' GT3
since the X51 has 345 Hp and the 01' GT3 has 360 HP and following the logic that porsche is conservative with power and performance numbers....could the X51 be really an 01' GT3 engine or super close?
a friend of mine who worked on an 01' GT3R race car crew says my X51 feels and sounds very similar...racecar had 420HP so not as fast obviously.
any ides if the engines are close in spec?

No,GT3 is a totally different (and better) motor based on the Racing GT1 engine (GT2 and TT share this block too) with a dry sump oiling system and 7,800 rpm redline. I believe the GT3 motor costs several (3 to 4) times as much as the M96 motor. Also, the M96 (shared by the Boxster) has a perennial problem with the rear mail seal leaking oil which the GT3 motors do not. Go for the early GT3 - you get adjustable suspension too (ride height coilovers and swaybars) and a real limited slip differential and a better transmission. In 10 years the GT3 will be a classic and the X51 will just be a 996 (resale values will reflect this).

GT3 has 381 HP

Also the GT3 is built on the "High Performance" line as it uses the dry sump crankcase like the turbo. X-51 is based on the NA P96 motor.
Grant - you beat me - We were posting at the same time.

Close as in what?? HP? then yes. But the engine is totally different.. one's made for race with high reving ability. Well, i think you're asking about performance, I think from 0 to 60 they're pretty close (assuming low rpm launch), but if you try to take one on the road from a starting speed where the GT3 always stays above 5,000 rpm.. it wouldnt be as close at all.. wouldnt say it would kill X51 cuz pulling a two car length slowly over a streched run.. that's nothing...

In speaking to a few people in Germany, the X51 is about as fast as a GT3 HP wise. The old GT3's were not quite up to the 360 hp spec. The X51 has a little less torque but a broader curve. The GT3 has better brakes, suspension, etc. so it will have faster lap times, but a C2 with X51 and X74 and the aero kit and some weight savers and a brake upgrade should be as good if not better due to other chassis refinements. As for the engines, they are very different in design BUT do share some common parts such as the intake manifold which is not used on the Standard 300 or 320 hp engine.

Guys, I certainly didn't mean to bash the X51s so hard. Here's the good news:
In EVO magazine this month, a C2 with X74 (not even X51) was over a second faster than a Ferrari 575 Maranello with the Fiorano handling packahe around their road course! I think this thing costs around $225k and has 505HP.
Pretty sweet. C2 beat everything except the Radical track-car (which I guess is street legal in the UK). Was well ahead of the M3 which fried its brakes after 3 laps (when will BMW get Brembos? - even the new C6 Vette will have them...)
So, the X51 would've really smoked it!

The two engines are totally different, even if they share a few parts <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> .Hey my 996 and the X50 TT both have the same shifter, but they are still light years apart in performance . I wish all 996s had the GT3 based engine/transmission but they don't, which I think is complete BS on the part of PAG, for $70k++ we should not share an engine with the Boxster IMO.

All I have to say is that the X51 X74 combo is the most potent vehicle I have ever driven. It is at least as fast around most tracks and much more fun than a TT

Of course that would depend on the driver and the track. All things being equal, the TTs are pulling 160 at the end of the straight-away at TWS.
There is nothing wrong with an X51, I'm sure it performs well, but for the same or not much more money I would get a GT3 or TT.

If I had to do it again and it was today instead of a year ago, I would go for the GT3. Unfortunately it was not available a year ago. So I have an X51. The GT3 and TT are very different cars. Mine is much more like a GT3 than a TT.
