Post Lightening the 996

Hi there and good day!! I welcome any comments about trying to lighten the 996 maybe 125-150 lbs. Since there are few engine upgrades for the 996 I mite dwell into this arena. Thanks in advance. Mike

Best bets seem to be

Mufflers- Stock ones are very heavy
Seats- Switch electric seats for Gt3 or similar
Wheels- Switch to 17 kinesis or like product

All of this might save you about 1/2 to 2/3 of what you want and it won't be inexpensive. However you are on the best track (in my humble opinion) to make your car faster

I just did a one day track event at Thunderhill and it was a blast. Just seeing other cars out there with the owners specifying best but not the cheapest to make your car fast on the track is lighten the car. regards. Mike

I guess they mentioned all the lightweight body panels to replace the heavy steel, and lexan to replace the glass. You could probably save more weight by going on a diet than you can by pulling up the carpet, however. You can save 60 or more pounds by running a low fuel level (save even more by replacing the OE tank with a fuel cell), except those front pounds are at the "right" end and help the front end stick. If you get too fast, you may want to add a lot of weight back in the form of a roll cage.

02 Carrera wheels save almost 25 lbs (depending on what 18" you have now - if you have and 18") and removing the back seats is good for another 30 lbs. If it's a cab and you want to get really crazy, you can remove the 50 to 60 lbs rollover protection. All this together with 60+ lbs saved swapping to the GT3 seats (depending on which stock seats you have) ought to get you beyond your goal.

Put a small fixed rear wing, replace the grille with light weight plastic and take out the hydraulics for raising wing.

Hi there sounds like some great ways to lighten up the car. Just out of curiosity how many total lbs you lighten the car after it was done for those who done it.Just in case if I switch to gt3 seats which I heard saves considerable weight and great for tracking is it easy to install and if I decide to switch back to the elctric ones would that be a hassle in itself or you think I'll love the gt3 seats so much I wouldn't switch at all. Also having done some tracking at Thunderhill it's mandatory to keep the windows rolled down. Would it be better just to remove the windows rather then add the lexan glass. I know it would be a hassle driving back with the windows opened but wondered how much the the lexan glass weighs in comparison to the stock glass windows. I'm hooked on tracking : ).

I got a 993 down from 3100lbs to 2790lbs.
lighter seats, removed rear flip up seats, removed all front carpet like RS, lightweight hood, lightweight rear decklid and spoiler (broke even on this one), lightweight hipreformqance exhaust, 1 set of carpets front & rear not 2 layers, RS doorpanels, removable Sony CD radio, no windshield washer bottle, catalytioc converters gone, spare tire/wheels (30lbs deleted long ago too, lightweight wheels, rear undertray junked too, 1/4tank gasoline, cruise control deleted, RSCS heater tube.
Car is still street registered in PA. Driven less than 5000miles/year.

I have gotten everything out without getting completely silly........I could have deleted all carpets (racecar loud inside unacceptable)........GT2 ceramic brakes $8000 (save 100lbs but too much $$$$), lightweight 993RSCS glass (saves 5-10 maximum ........methinks 3-5lbs but $1100 and rattles like crazy in window mouldings--not acceptable) deleting A/C, CD radio and creature comforts (cant do that its a streetcar!!!!!!!!!)
have a great day
