Post Gas cap stolen..."Check Engine" light won't go off

Some ***hole stole my gas cap a few days ago. I noticed it only because the "Check Engine" light came on. After I got a new gas cap from Porsche and put it on, the light still won't go off. Do I need to go to Porsche and have them reset it, or disconnect the battery, or what?

Thanks...

The CEL (check engine light) should turn itself off after something like 20 cycles. Driving cycles. On/off. If you just sit there and turn key on/off 20 times nothing will happen. Disconnceting battery will make you lose all your radio stations and the anti-theft code....

Good Luck.

If memory serves, it'll reset after 25 ignition cycles - but it needs at least 3 pressurization cycles in between - that takes approx 12 minutes of engine operation. Just drive it for a few days - it should turn off with no problems.

Guess you should lock your car when unattended...

Actually I found out that the "pin" that moves in when you lock the car works, but the part it is supposed to pin into is missing. So basically my gas flap does not lock. Argh.

I had the same problem only caused by "topping off" the gas tank. These cars do not like that and it will trigger the CEL. Goes away after the defined number of cycles.....just be patient.

Yes, that's another issue - if one tops off the tank, fluid (gasoline) can get in the vapor recovery system - and that will trigger an emissions event.

Yeah, lived through some cycles once just because I didn't turn the gas cap three clicks (which I hate, I usually hold the button in to set e-brakes even). I think when I refueled once or twice it reset, been a while.
