Default Another tire size question

I need to replace tires on my '02 C2. Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is not available in 285/30 18. Can I use the 295/30 18 on the rear and will I have to go to 235/40 18 on the front? Are there clearance issues with these sizes?

yup. just make sure the the 295 will fit on your rim (check the rec'd rim size for the tire based on manufacturer suggestions). A webstie like Tire Rack has all that info.

If your rim is a 10" it might not be the optimal size to put on but could very well be fine. FYI....the 295's on the GT3 are on a 11" rim.

Not to threadjack, but I had to replace my rears (sidewall was disentegrating due to low pressure). They did not have any acceptible tires in 285/30-18, so they recommended the 275/35-18 PS2. I was just looking at the tire calculator (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) and it looks like I would have been better off with the 295/30-18 instead.

Is the 275 okay, or is it too narrow?

The 295/30 and 275/35 are BOTH just barely 1% different than the 265/35 tires you had. You would be fine with both.

Okay, thanks. I looked again and for the 03 C2 they list the following as tire sizes in 18":

Original Equipment Front Optional 225/40-18

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Original Equipment Rear Optional 285/30-18

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Front Optional 18" 225/40-18

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rear Optional 18" 265/35-18

I bought the car used with 18" hollow spoke Turbo style wheels (I hope I have that right - still learning which wheel is which) and 285/30-18 Conti's which I believe to be the original wheels/tires (only 13k miles on the car).

The 295 will fit fine and you don't need to change tire size in the front. I prefer the 295 as I think the 285 looks too short. For the person asking about the 275/35 question, I have not used it on a 996, but did uses both 285/30 and 275/35 on a 930. I can tell you that the width are about the same and I actually prefer the 275 as the tire height fills the gap better. The 295 might be as better choice, but it is no reason to throw out a prefectly good tire.

You can go with the 295 but you are asking to induce more understeer without moving to the 235 in front.

The MSPS2's ARE available in the 285/30/18 size, just check Wheel Enhancement. Their prices are great and they specialize in P-Car socks and shooes. I know because I bought 2 sets this year..... (there's a whole 'nother story about why....... just make sure you KNOW how much pressure you have in your tires when you go to the track).

Check'm out on the web at www.wheelenhancement.com They're very knowledgable, friendly, and CHEAP!!!

For the record, I'm just a satisfied customer and don't profit from their business.

I run a 315/25 and don't feel that much understeer. Then again I'm used to that 930 so I like to throttle lift oversteer to correct understeer. In general the width difference in 285 and 295 won't cause an issue with understeer. Infact consider it is the standard size on a GT3, GT2, and Turbo.

'Nupe - According to the WheelEnhancement site, the 285/30/18 is available in the Michelin Pilot Sport and the Pilot Sport Rib, but it is NOT available in the Pilot Sport PS2. You might have looked in the 19" wheel column. FYI.

John,

Believe it or not, I was just thinking about a couple of days ago. Glad to see you're back! Have not "seen or heard" anything from you in quite some time. Have you been MIA or have you just been lurking? Did you get the keyboard fixed/replaced? Bring me up to speed with what’s been going on! If you prefer, you can PM me

gota911,
You're right. I confused the 2 with the rib.
