"MOST" Bus Technology ???
For the MY03 996 cars it's going to be possible to retrofit the new PCM system.
However, the PCM can only be retrofitted on cars with "MOST" bus technology.
I understand it is a digital way to connect car audio components, but what are the details?
Therefor, can someone explain this "MOST" bus technology?

I never tried to retrofit the first generation of PCM and I can't tell if it's possible.
According to Porsche technicians, the new PCM is a vast improvement over the previous version.
There is also the posibility to add a telephone module which makes it even more interesting to retrofit.

Gert,
The ROW version always included a GSM phone module where you'd insert a SIM card in the unit and the phone controls would be right in the screen. Is the new version any different?

For this unit, you have to get the GSM module seperately.

Gert,
Here is a link to a full explaination of the features of MOST technology...
<a href="http://www.oasis.com/technology/technology.htm" target="_blank">Most Technology</a>
Be sure and download this <a href="http://www.oasis.com/downloads/misc/MOSTSpecification_Framework_1V1.pdf" target="_blank">PDF</a> if you want the real technical specs in detail (60 pages - about 670K).

Gert,
MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) is an optical bus which connects most all telematics in MY03 Porsches, MY03 Audi A8 and MY03 Mercedes Maybach and some S class cars.
Details can be found here:
<a href="http://www.mostnet.de/downloads/Specifications/" target="_blank">www.mostnet.de/downloads/Specifications/</a> MOST%20Framework/framework1_1-07.pdf
<a href="http://www.oasis.com" target="_blank">www.oasis.com</a>
In Porsche sportscars (986 and 996)the fiber optic cables connect the headunit (PCM) to the DSP amplifier to the phone to the CD changer, etc.
Therefore, aftermarket replacements for audio systems just got a whole lot more complicated. If you break the ring by removing a component, then very bad things will happen in the car.
I work with this everyday, as I work for Bose and designed the DSP amplifiers for all of the cars listed above.
Please feel free to email/post with further questions

Lewis, care to comment on why nearly every 996 Bose owner has to turn off LOUDNESS and lower Bass EQ to -4 setting to avoid excessive booming? The factory "FLAT" postion should already be optimized .
I have BOSE systems in two MBZs and they are EQ'd very well at " 0" setting in the bass region from the factory.

Viken,
Please do not take this the wrong way, but why for a person that feels that Porsche no longer make a true "sports car", why do you have such a depth of knowledge for the 996 series?
Thanks,
Scott

MKW,
I can offer an explanation, but please remember I'm just the electrical engineer who designed the hardware/amplifier, not the systems engineers who tune the cars, nor the Porsche executives who give final approval on the sound based on driving weekends prior to start of production.
The tunings/eq are optimized for the car with the engine running at highway speed with normal ambient noise. If you stop the engine or remove the road noise by stopping the car, you will experience a higher bass response (I will not get into the vehicle noise cancellation effects...that's what that little microphone is for in the dash).
I normally suggest to people to leave loudness off (the tuned ports in these cars are very efficient and don't need any signal preconditioning in my opinion) and adjust eq according to your hearing response.
The Porsche sportscars (986 and 996) were different due to the rear engine and higher ambient noise compared to other Bose OEM non sports cars,
FWIW, I normally drive my 01Turbo with the radio off (it's not a Bose, it's a Becker system) since I like the engine noise more than music!
Please feel free to post/email/pm me with any questions.

Mav,
Yes there is. That is what that small microphone on the dashboard left is for; it connects directly to the amplifier.
It is not tied into the speedometer, but based solely on the amplitude/frequency of cabin noise.

Thanks Lewis. Maybe the Porsche execs involved in the final seat of the pants sound evaluation love that thumping BeeGees kinda 70s disco that still seems popular in Germany , LOL !

Is that why Porsche has of thousands of $$$ of dress up accessories at the parts counter but basically no OEM warranted performance parts , LOL ?
Read that the new Nissan Z will have lot's of full warranty factory performance parts , including a supercharger kit , from parts dept. We get $600 exhaust tips and $900 alum shift /brake levers ...vrrroooommm
