Question 996 Pricing

I currently own a 964 cab and am looking to add another car. I am looking at a 1999 996 Cab. It is black/black with the hardtop option. 71K miles with no history. 6 speed, leather, dual power seats, sports package (?), Cd player and 18" wheels.
Because there is no history, what should I be looking for? Also, is $42K a fair price?

I think for such a high mileage early 996 model car, $42K is way too much; especially without history and a bad used-car market. My best estimate, based on Excellence magazine's guidelines, would be in the low 30s.

I'm surprised to say that I'd have to disagree with FlyingToaster, which sort of bums me out too since I'm in the market for a 99 coupe. In the past, I have found that edmunds.com "Trade-In" value is just about dead on for the price in which 75% or so of the sellers tell me to take a hike. {In otherwords, the right price!} For the car you're looking at, it's trade-in is coming up as $45,993. {base of $47K - $2K for 71K - $100 color + $700 options} Sounds like you might have a fair deal. But given no history ... double check it is really clean ... no accidents, abuse, etc.
Good luck!

Pete,
Thanks for the input. I also checked on KBB and Edmunds and wasn't sure which (if any) was the definitive answer.

I am in SoCal and the car is in the Big Apple. Anyone know of a good shop/mechanic in NY to perform a PPI? Thanks.

FWIW, a little more data.
<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1872667077" target="_blank">Here's</a> one on Ebay that sold for $47,900. Not a convertable, but aero package ... and less miles. Seems to support the price you have.

To be fair, there is one that didn't fetch a bid higher than $37K, but reserve looked like it was set way too high which tends to drive people away.

Word of advice. Get the VIN, I think any dearler can lookup the history. Hopefully someone can help you out. Then, DO NOT get the PPI done where it has been serviced. This doesn't tell you where to go, I know, but it will help you get an honest opinion. I had a PPI done with a non-seller recommendation. Unfortunately, this person had worked on the car and knew the owner. I did not get an honest appraisal. I can't really blame him as I was a one-time customer and this other guy dumped a lot of money with him.
