Question Paint Quality on 996's

What do you guys think of the paint work? I've got 11K on my '01 C4 and I do normal driving on paved roads, no dirt or gravel. I took a real good look at the paint when I waxed her up and there are some small chips down to the primer, especially behind the wheelwells and on the front bumper. Is this normal for Porsche paint? MY BMW M3 is a few years older and it doesn't have the nicks that the 911 has already. Is that why the dealer was selling that Scotchguard clear protection? Just wondering what your experiences have been with the paintwork.

As a comparison I have a 99 Carrera and an 01 CLK55 AMG. Both cars have about 12k miles. The Mercedes has 10 times the number of rock chips and most of them down to the primer (or more). Granted the CLK55 is driven in commute traffic more than the Carrera, I am pleased that the Carrera seems more resistant.

Although, could be that the Mercedes is that much worse?

Hey Loren- how does the CLK 55 AMG compare to the 996? I think the CLK is the best looking of the Mercedes but darn the auto tranny shys me away from getting one : (. Regards. Mike

With respect to paint chips having chips to the primer versus just the paint-is there a different approach to touching it up? I've driven BMW's all my life(3,5,7) and they chip to primer as well. Regards. Mike

Mike,

The CLK55 would be a super commute car if it were only a stick. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />
It will still blow the doors off your Mustangs and M3's though.

The CLK55 with it's 355 HP V8 seems quicker from 70 to 120 MPH. But the 996 is faster low end, high end and of course through the turns. The CLK55 has speed limited by the DME to 160 whereas the 996 will do about 174 as is only limited by your courage (and revs).

If I had to give up one it would surely be the CLK55.

Part 2:
Touch up painting is 2-step. First a color coat and then the clear cloat.

Mike,

Are you going to the Autocross at Marina Airport (near Monterey) tomorrow? I will likely go, would love to see your car.
