Red face Dead Tiptronic

Last time I drove the car was Saturday morning, everything fine. I have noticed the gear shifter felt "notchy" and asked the dealer - they checked it out months ago and said it was fine. This afternoon I got in and turn the key to the on position and the gear indicator on the gauge says it's in neutral (it's in park). I start the car and get the same thing. I move the gear shifter downward and there is almost no resistence... all loose, feels totally wrong.

For background, there has been no abuse of this transmission that could cause this sort of thing. Is the next step towing to the dealer? Warranty coverage?

Thanks for any fast advice available

My next step would certainly be the dealer, but no towing - flatbed.

What a bummer! Hope you're not too far from your dealer. Haven't heard anyone on the list post problems with the Tip, so please keep us TipS owners posted...and good luck!

Bummer. The dealer may have to replace the whole tranny. I remember a post 2 months ago. Go to search, keyword "Japan". Topic was "lemon in Japan".

Good luck. Hope things work out for you.

Thanks for the advice guys - I figured with this kind of problem it would mean a new tranny from the dealer, but I guess I was hoping it was this bad... Unfortunately the dealer is 2 hours away but I have have it sent on a flatbed tomorrow... my main concern is that the fix is covered under warranty (and getting to the mountains of North Carolina tomorrow, a trip I had planned in the p-car).

Really wishing the fam hadn't demanded Tip... next one is a manual :-(

Thanks,

Mike

Michael,
I had problems with my 02C2 Tip. It had about 300kms on it at the time. The transmission itself was 'notchy' and I had no problems with the shifter or the display of the gears on the gauge. It was dripping transmission fluid as well. The transmission was replaced and I now have 5000kms on the new one without any problems. Your problem seems like warranty work to me. Hope all goes well with your car. Keep us posted.

It might just be something as simple as the shifter cable dettached, or broken. If you feel no resistance in the shifter and the display says neutral.

The mechanics at the local dealer have nick-named the trans 'The Driptronic' because of the number of leaks they have seen.
