Question Can you simply retrofit Litronic lights?

I know a good source for a set of used RHD Litronic lights and they are cheap!

But what I want to know is, can I simply retrofit them in place of my current clear lights?
Do I need special wiring harnesses? Where can I get the wiring diagrams for both?
Is this a simple task...etc etc.

If you have done this to your 996 would you please share your experiences.

Cheers,
Scoucer

You will need the correct Litronic upgrade wiring harness, which is around $200 in the US when it is separate from the light kit.

Thanks Nick,
I wonder if this extra wiring harness can be hand made. I can't imagine it's too complicated.
If only I had a wiring diagram it would help as I am an electronics engineer.

I have installed the litronic retrofit kit on 2 Boxsters - same as your 2000 996. We video taped the second install and someday it will be on a DVD. Porsche has 2 sets of instructions, the original and a more recent. Here is the original. Instructions

Since you are in the UK you should check the UK Boxster board as much info has been posted there by myself and others. Unfortunately the search function does not seem to be working. UK board

The RHD and LHD litronics are the same. There is a lever inside the light to change back and forth. The problem in the UK is MOT, as you do not get the headlight washers or the sensors on the suspension with the retrofit kit like you do with it as a factory option. We do not have to worry about this in the US.

The kit is shown in the picture, except for the headlights. There is a control unit that rotated the low beams up to the high beams when the high beams are on. You can simply put in the litronic headlight without the control unit and it will work find - you just will not get the beam rotation. Jeff

Hi Tool Pants,
Muchas Gracias. However Loren beat you to it.
I have decided to buy and fit them as they don't look too hard to fit. I note the information notice that the retrofit is not equiped with automatic headlight beam adjustment (AHBA). I guess the "Dummy cover" in the parts list is to replace the thumb control on the dash for this purpose. Is there a reason why this feature would not work?

PS: be careful posting such material as the sysop might bight you. But thanks heaps anyway.

Cheers,

US cars with standard halogen have never had the headlight adjustment switch. I have only seen pictures of it, looks like a thumb wheel you rotate and it has numbers. We get a dummy cover for where the wheel would be. In the litronic kit a dummy cover is included as you are expected to remove the wheel. In the US we throw it away. The cover in my hand is left over from the retrofit kit.

How does the wheel adjustment work? I assume by rotating the wheel the beam goes up or down. Is this done with a motor? Jeff

I just found a very useful link on pelican's site that explains how to do this in great detail with lots of pics.
