Post 996 windshield

Just bought trinket to go with my toy; a radar detector. There is a warning on the detector's manual regarding permanently marring the "anti-laceration" film found on some car's windshields with the suction cups. "Some Porsche cars" was a specific example given. Anybody know anything about this?

Palting, I have been using a radar detector with frequency (2 - 3 times a week) for the past nine-months. I clean the inside of the car, including the windshield, once every 2-3 weeks. There are obviously marks during the interim, but I have never seen anything permanent, nor any sort of discoloration/impairment.

Don't know the technical aspects, but have provided you my practical experience.

Regards.

Better small laceration than expensive tickets. V1 is the only way to go. I swear by it, no marks on the windshield, only one ticket so far. Its the best detector by a long shot.

Coop, I've got a V1 too, and I swear by it.

But, do you know anything about the integrated radar (front/back) that is installed on some of the 996's. A dealer told me it's made by the same company that makes the K-40, but that it's their top, top end ($1,800?!), and is actually more effective than the V1, because its got a diffuser action.

Any word on this?

Regards.

Thanks for the replies. I think it's just one of those CYA things that companies like to do to avoid lawsuits. Thought I'd ask. It's getting attached to the windshield first thing tomorrow!

Thanks Palting. Terrific links. Much appreciated. The SRX is exactly what I was talking about.

Palting - I had the same fear when buying my passport 8500 (probably what you bought from the sound of the warning). I asked my dealer - they said no problem - but I wimped out - gave the 8500 to my wife, and installed an indash K40 in my C4 with a lazer diffuser as well. That being said, I don't think there is a real issue there.

By the way - the 8500 is great - I have them in both my other cars and it is a better detector (IMO) than the K40 I put in my porshe. Passport now makes (didn't when I was in the market) an indash version of their detector with a lazer diffuser/shifter).

Yup. After mulling it over, did get the 8500. Thanks for the reply.

Found out that some of the older Porsches (1980's) did have this laminate on the interior surface of the windshield. I think it is an endorsement to the reliability and longevity of Porsches in that of all the fast cars in the last 20 years, Porsche was specially mentioned as still benefiting from the use of a radar detector! Porsche. There is no substitute!!
