Cool Sports Design Wheel Weights *Updated with Pictures!

For those who are curious on how much the Sports Design Wheels weigh,

Front 18X8 25.4LBS
Rear 18X10 29.2LBS

I had the center pieces painted black so before I mounted the tires, I was able to weigh them. I just used our home weighing scale so accuracy I'm guessing is +/- 0.2 lbs

Good to know, thanks for the post. I weighed mine with the tires on since I wanted to learn how much more weight I was carrying over my lighweights on track. All I can say is that those darn sport designs are NOT light!

Cool

Boy these wheels are heavy! at least compared to some of the aftermarket ones like BBS RS-GTs which are only 22 lbs. But I know they'll take all the bumps, potholes, high speed turns and rumble strips .etc as they are the first GT3 wheels which were battle hardened in Nurburgring by Walter Rohrl

Here's a pix of the wheels after I got the center pieces painted black. I'm really happy I've always love the looks of black wheels!

What did they run ($) to get painted? I will be back in the area in 5-6 months and want to paint my SD's as well.

$85 each center piece. $25 each rim lip for the clear coat.

I seperated the center pieces from the rims myself, with that damn special tool.. "triple square" bit/ 12 point torx, luckily carried at Pep Boys and brought the center pieces to a local paintshop here in Virginia Beach.

I initialy wanted to do powder coating but I am nervous about the heating process so I just opted for painting. I just made sure that I asked for
the paint shop's darkest black and toughest/top quality clearcoat. I also had the same clear coat applied on the lips after I striped the faded/scratched old clear. I then polished them(that needed a lot of elbow grease).
Removed the scratches from the rim lips by sanding the spots with 600 grit paper, and polished the rests starting with 1500 grit and finishing with 2000 grit with plolishing compound to wet the sand paper instead of water. Too much work but rewarding if you're patient. Which is not me

How in the world did you get the bolts back to factory torque spec??????? Everybody I have talked to (including Wheel Enhancement) said they will NOT remove the two pieces and instead mask, etc., since breaking the seal and the bolts are damn near impossible to get back original.

I really like them. I'm not just sure 'cause a couple of listers said that they're using spacers with them. They'll be my 2nd set of shoes

If you want to be exact:

Final torque of 145 inlbs. cross torqued first to half(75 in lbs). Don't ask names, but Its from a friend in engineering section, BBS. You know how those liability lawyers are

Make sure you have the right "triple square" bits too. You dont want to strip them when you first remove them. Replacement will be a challenge to find but possible.

LVDell,

Also, if you gonna do this, ensure that the mating surfaces do not get painted. Very close tolerance.

Car's looking sharp Mike. I love the sport design look, was going to buy a set but bailed out for the kinesis. Im planning to get my kinesis centers painted black in Spring, you know of any local shops? I was thinking about sending them to Eric at Bumperplug to do the job when Im ready.

Thanks Vove! Smart choice on Kinesis. Much, much lighter! Imagine the extra 8 lbs this wheels has when they start spinning. I used to balance helicopter rotor blades, and a 5 ounce balancing washer equates to more than 6 lbs of weight when spinning at almost a couple of hundreds rpm.

The shop I used is just a regular auto body paint shop. Very knowledgeable though. I'm not sure if you want to travel that far from DC, but they're down here in Virginia Beach. I'm sure you'll find good ones up there.

Mike, the black wheels look great! They remind me of my old wheels which were black, very aggressive look! Have you thought about polishing the lip? It will make the black centers pop out a little more.

Also, pretty interesting about the weights of the rims. My LM's came in at 22lbs and 24 lbs and they are 19s.

Jon, Thanks! I love the agressive looks of the black centers. I did polish the lips. Used 1500 then 2000 grit. Kept the sand paper wet with the polishing compound instead of water. Then finished them off with just the polishing compound and lots of elbow grease. I still had the lips coated afterwards with that tough clear coat 'cause that iron particle from the brake pads left on aluminum surface of the lips for a week, coupled with moisture will rapidly create pits of corrosion due to the dissimilar metals.
