I have a police officer friend who was telling me about a strange incident that happened to another officer in his squad. This officer was out in the desert somewhere near the Barstow, CA area using his radar gun to catch speeders. The officer heard a car coming down the road but did not see any lights. All of the sudden his radar gun started going off saying 122 mph and at the same time the car noise elevated and then went away. The officer jumped in his car and started chasing whatever it was that set off his radar gun. It took him about 20 min to finally catch the guy and when he pulled him over the car he saw it was a Ferrari 355 with its lights out. He approached the driver and when he looked inside the car he saw a pair of night vision goggles. The guy had been driving with all his lights out at 120+ mph wearing night vision goggles to see the road! The officer ended up giving the guy a speeding ticket for 80 because of his creativity and told the man to use his lights. I just thought that was worth sharing with you guys.

I don't think I would believe that, because I think if you're wearing night vision goggles and come across any lights you will be blinded. It's too uch of a risk when driving a $100+ car. I could be wrong though.

Thats interesting about the NVG's because i know pilots who do total black outs often. I have experienced it as well under full NVG and total blackness and they do such things in dusty and cloudy weather. So i dont doubt its not possible, all you have to do is know a long straight stretch of road with no change of terrain and im sure it could be done easily.

Having flown with NVG's in training and combat, I can say that the comment about oncoming lights is accurate and will shut the NVG's down, not a good situation to be in while driving at high speeds.

Having used NVGs in the military on several occasions I'd concur that it would be dangerous because if 1) any warning lights on a darkened dash popped on or 2) any light sources outside the car surprised the driver, the light would either blind the driver or shut down the NVGs (if the level of light was too high).
