pcm cds: Ripoff?
Taking delivery next month of new 996 C4S. Have PCM 2. There are 7 separate CDs that together cover the continental USA. The dealer says, you get the one CD for your part of the country free and then its $160 per CD if you want the others. This sounds outrageous to me. Customers in smaller countries don't have this problem, it seems like those of us who live in the US are uniquely penalized for living in a big country. My dealer sympathizes but is unable/unwilling to get me the entire set for free. Is it me? Any thoughts or suggestions? I am getting ready to write to PCNA and complain, as this is my 3rd Porsche they might even listen.
I believe PCM2 also uses Navtech data in which case you can order the entire US set of $299. Call them at 1-888-NAV-MAPS (628-6277) for full details. I have PCM1 which I find totally useless as map coverage in my area is dismal.
Just be prepared for both to disappoint unless you're only interested in large cities. You can call Navtech and have somebody check out your area of interest. In lots of areas they have only major highways and large seas of green. Essentially worthless since you really want the program when you're off the beaten track. After living with mine, I'd say forget it. AS
Thanks for the info. My salesman didn't know that PCM 2 comes with the 2, all inclusive disks. I did not order the PCM, it was on the car that I got a great deal on and I am not paying for it so that should help temper whatever dissapointment I might feel at its inadequacies. I feel sorry for those who do pay for it as it is quite pricey.
THe PCM 2 discs arrived by fedex yesterday, there are 2, one east and one west with a one state overlap. The enclosed written material lists the metro areas for which detailed info is included and it is really not that much. If you are in an out of the way location, or not near a major city, you will not get detailed information, pretty lame. We'll see how it works in the real world, I'll update you all then, thanks.....
