I installed the real FabSpeed kit last night and I'm very satisfied with the installation and look under the hood. The sound and performance effect is noticable.

Sure, you can probably save a few $$$ making your own mods, but I'm sure for most of us the cost of messing around like that really isn't justified when you can buy this so inexpensively. Plus, the carbon fibre's nice plus everything looks great under the covers.

Like I posted a month ago, I went from 2-way averaged 7.8 seconds to 6.8 ( !?) seconds 60-100 mph in 3rd gear ( Tiptronic) after 150 miles of " relearning". Only difference was the temp was 10 deg cooler for the " after" numbers. I will retest this weekend ( after 500 miles with the Fabspeed) on same road ( ambient temp supposed to be same as " before" numbers) and will report back.

MKW,
the 1 second change in acceleration would indicate a HP increase of over 20-30 HP if totally accurate. The temperature difference could account for manybe 5hp but the rest is really impressive from just an airbox mod.

OK, just got back with new numbers. Same test road, avg time of 3 runs each way. Same fuel ( 1/2 tank). 3rd gear ( no kickdown) Tiptronic 60-100 mph.
A) Several months ago , before mods , 70 degrees ambient : 7.75 seconds , another day at 52 degrees ambient 7.48 seconds
B) 1 month ago, after 150 miles with Fabspeed box , 41 degrees ambient : 6.80 seconds
C) Today, after 650 miles with mod , 49 deg ambient but mild fog : 6.87 seconds
So, comparing at similar temp but different humidity, the Fabspeed has improved time from 7.5 to about 6.9 seconds , a 0.6 second improvement - a significant 5-7 car lenghths in rolling acceleration.
(Published testing in car mags of Tiptronic have usually shown 60-100 split times of 7.5-7.6 seconds, by the way. )

Numbers aside, the best part of the mod ,for me, a Tiptronic owner, is that "kicking down " from 5th to 3rd gear at cruising speeds ( 65-75 mph) puts the engine at the " snarly" part of the Fabspeed box's louder, improved intake sound. Makes passing exciting.

Hi MKW-where was the testing done?I do live in the bay area myself and be nice to do such tests on my car since I did a few mods myself. Those are very good numbers indeed. regards.Mike

well, this AM , 49 degrees but sunny, I did some " flying " 60-100 mph, like the magazines ( which averaged 7.5-7.6 seconds). All my previous times were at cruise control- held 60 mph, then mashing throttle. That held car in same gear. Today's runs were timing from acceleration from 20 mph on, using AUTO mode shifting. Downside is lost time from shifting 2nd to 3rd gear at around 65 mph. Upside is momentum .
Average two way time was 6.6 seconds for "flying " 60-100.
(BTW, before I installed Fabspeed , I had blocked off the air muffler box from above with a plug ( like Ben) and installed a BMC filter ( which I doubt does much). The intake sound improved and I timed 7.2 seconds best , but that was with the plastic MAF screen in place. )

That screen removal is a LARGE % of the performance gain.

Ben - I will run with the Fabspeed with the screen back in place , then a run w/o the screen but using ridged/diverted OEM air bridge and see what works best. Have you done any before/after runs ? I find " seat of the pants" to be useless for mods that net less than at least 30 hp gain.

It "feels" the same to me. But like you said, it's pretty hard to "feel" this tiny a diff. However, .2 to .4 sec improvement as claimed around here seems beyond silly. Increasing the displacement to 3.6 and tweaking the vario cam (using the system on the turbos) and modifying the exhaust on the 2002s barely shaved off .20. Any claims that a silly air box modification would do the same is just that - silly.

Ben , I am posting my numbers to help all here. If I got same or worse with any mod , you can bet I'll post that too. Like I said, the results are " stop watch " numbers that are mainly felt above 5500 rpm as faster run to redline at 3rd gear at near 100 mph. Around town driving feel is the SAME. The '02 gives biggest boost in seat of the pants at part throttle around time zippyness - that's significant. THAT, you can't do with a box mod. Perhaps my '99 non electronic throttle C2 responds better to this mod than '00 on. who knows. My mod is Fabspeed plus BMC plus blocking the hot air intake holes plus hundreds of miles to reset ECM short and long term fuel trims.

mkw,
Please don't get me wrong, I don't think your numbers are bs. Rather, I'm wondering if maybe there isn't some testing methodolgy which would account for the change (road surface, elevation, humidity, temp - both of the car and external, gas - both type and amount, any add'l weight during one run vs. the other, etc). There are just a kazillion variables. If all variables were the same, I'd say it's "highly" unlikely there is a .2 sec diff and not even remotely possible there is a .40. Again, look at all of the fairly significant changes to the 02 to get the .20 diff.

Weather can EASILY account for a 10% diff (adj temp, humidity, and elevation and you'll find diff well in excess of 10%)! Further, I don't know about "several months ago", but the 996 has been PROVEN to get faster as the motor is broken in.
