Default Where is the cheapest place to buy a replacement key?

My dealer wants $240.00 for a replacement key! I am sorry, but that is totally out of line. I really just need the metal part that is cut. I have an extra transmitter head. Any help would be appreciated.

the $240 probably includes about $100 for programming and is for a complete new key. if you just need the "cut part" you should be able to get it and i would think (but not 100% sure) that the key would not have to be reprogrammed, and should save you a few chips.

i replaced my entire key a few months ago for exactly $240.00 from my dealer.

$240 is the going rate including the key head, key blank cutting, and programming it.

The dealer should be willing to just cut a blank for you or I'd find another dealer.

just get the carerra gt keyhead.. i still find it hilartious how the carerra GT keyhead is priced less than what the 996 keyhead price is.. i think the profit hungry execs made a booboo when trying to rip us all off and forgot what they were charging 996 owners for their keyhead vs the carerra gt <g>

Default I just need the blank to have the dealer cut it. What is a reasonable cost for this?

Also, can most dealers cut a blank on-site or does it have to come from Porsche. My local dealer is telling me that they have to order it cut from Porsche and just the metal part is $100 plus. I know that I then have to get the entire set of leys reprogrammed, but that is a 10 minute deal. A dealer that wants my business should do that for free.

I did it this way:

- key shaft (cut to VIN) from Sunset Porsche - about $70
- key head (with bar code tag) from Ebay - $50
- car programmed at dealer for two keys - $50.
