Question Brake Squeals..

Was just wondering why do brakes squeal, the noise is terrible and not worthy of a 996!

I've had the pads changed with originals but didnt change the brake discs.. Car has 67,000km.

(PS: I admit... had to checkspell 'squeal', FYI other synonyms are yell, cry, shriek, yelp, howl, wail, scream, screech and squeak..!)

Did they install new vibration dampers (as Porsche recommends)?

Take a hose and spray your brake calipers & pads real well. Try to remove as much brake pad dust as possible and the squeal should go away.

Waz, Brake squeal is caused by a high frequency vibration that results from your pad sliding across the surface of your disk. The idea behind dampers is that they isolate the pad from the caliper stopping the vibration. On our 996s they suggest replacing them each time you replace your brakes so if you had your pads replaced at the dealer they should have replaced them. If not, replacing them might help. You might also find that time will help as your pads conform or are bedded to your disks. Hosing them will remove dust which could be causing vibration I guess.

Now, about brake squeal not being worthy of a 996. Brake squeal is very much indicative of a performance car. I say throw out the dampers, slap in some Pagid Orange pads and head for the track.

Good Luck,
Jim

A little squeal from the pads are normal. I remembered that brake squeal was mentioned in the owners manual. It stated that Porsche is using high performance pads on the 996s and occasional squealing is expected.

Thx Jim & Blue,
See no dealer in this country.. so i got to get my own parts. I'll ask for pad dampers and get back to change them.. meanwhile am busy on the clutch/rear seal changing..

And how i wish there were a track here! i get to have the common streets as my racing track early every sunday and it kinda works excpet for the insults i get from the locals here!

I have noticed a lot of brake squeel too with my car. I find it very embarassing at times...especially in a cab with the top down in a busy parking lot or something. Screeech!!! People look at you and smile "like you have this expensive car but it sounds like an old bus when stopping". I have cleaned the wheels and brakes real well and have found that it works for short period of time only. My dealership says the noise is normal but my guy at Just Tires says its not normal at all. He says I should try ceramic brake pads. Has anyone tried them?

Waz? There is a better solution to prevent hearing the squeal! Raise the volume of your new sound system.
I told you brother Bought a 993-94, you can't imagine the roaring of the engine, i wish i have this noise on my 996.
What do you think, can i do something with mine?

Hi nccab,

I have a C4S-02, ceramic pads are standard option, never had the squeel thing since i bought the car and that was in February 2002. Try the above posted solutions, they are of much help.

fadz,
you can now start by changing the exhaust.. ask the listers i dont have an idea but i know it comes with an automatic or switchable valve that bypasses some sound deadening device over some rpm or speed, and then it'll roar the way you want, talkless about the extra bitty poneys you might get in the process.. am sure there must be other aftermarket products to raise power, but MAKE SURE YOUR DEALER WILL NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY BY DOING THIS..
