Question 996 engine specs/swap/help heh

Hey guys!

Im over from the vwvortex forum, just needing some questions answered. My uncle has a 996 engine and transmission for me to drop in my 2001 VW GTI. I know i know the 996 is real engined/rear wheeled and mine is front everything. Is it possible to even venture into this project? also what are the specs on the 996. the engine has 8972 miles on it, its from a 1999.

Thanks alot.

I can't believe it would. I have a 2001 GTI VR6 as my daily, and looking at it, the VR6 barely fits in that engine bay. The 996 engine is just too wide. It also has way too much power for the stock transmission (I can't imagine how you would adapt the 996 tranny). It is possible... but only if you have $$$ out the wazoo

Also, if my memory serves me, these are the specs for the engine.

296 bhp
258 lb-ft of torque
3.39 L displacement

and the tranny is a 6 speed manual.

Well my uncle also has the transmission as well from the car.. when/if i go into this project i plan on ripping everything out, getting a wide body kit, and the whole 9 yards. Like i said i imagine i will have to put the engine in the back so that will call for alot of body work.. but what is the hp/torque for this particular engine stock

Not at all. You can't even do that with a GTI, the engine is too long to be used in the back. You might be able to do it mid engined, but like I said, it will be a lot of $$$. It could easily cost you as much as the GTI cost new to do this.

You can buy a used '99 996 6spd coupe for a very depreciated $50K right now. Why would you put almost as much money ( current car plus untold thousands in R&D , untold months or years in fabrication and install headaches) into this project, for which you won't even be able to give the car away, much less sell it , when you are done? Save your money and sanity.
