Unhappy $200 Oil Change....?!?!

Well I just passed 1K miles and thought I would get my oil changed to get rid of any break in particles and be on the safe side.

Well I called my dealer this morning and they quoted me $200!!!!!

Now I have been reading up on the various costs of a DIY oil change and it looks like you could do it for around 80-100 dollars?

I plan to do a lot of my oil changes myself but since I don't have a convenient spot or facilities currently I thought I would give the dealer a try.

1. Is this overpriced even for a dealer?

2. What are some of the costs you have experiences with a dealer vs. private shop?

3. Can anybody list the total costs needed to get setup to do my own oil changes..i.e.not just oil but any special wrenches you may have to buy such as a filter wrench?

Per oil change:
$45 for 9 quarts of Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic
$10 for OEM oil filter

Then there are initial one-time expenses for the jack, oil pan, and filter wrench ($50-$150).

The 996 only uses one filter (unlike the 993), and both the oil filter and drain plug are located in easy-to-reach places. It's no different from changing the oil on a Honda - DIY is no prob.

Any shop (dealer or private) will try to run you up just because it's a Porsche.

Thanks for the info.

You would think they would do them for around cost. Most dealers have to do that anyway because they often have higher trained techs doing oil changes and their hourly rates are usually much higher than say the guys at jiffy lube. Doing oil changes at competitive rates is a good way to keep customers in the service dept. and the sales department.

I would think maybe $75 or something would be fair. The service advisor tried desperately to substantiate the price when I almost fell off my chair. She said $100 for the oil and an hour labor at close to the same price. Jesus pay the tech and sell the oil for cost at the very least. Pathetic.

yeah that's the main thing, is that they jack up the price of oil 100% and then you have the additional cost of the labor which includes the 20 minutes of drain time I just did mine easy as pie.

Add my experience to others. I do my own, costs me $50 bucks and it gets done right. In theory you should have the right size filter housing wrench and a inch pounds torque wrench for both the filter housing and the drain plug.

But really, it is pretty stupid proof.....
