This is done with a chunk of clay and some lubricant rubbing it all over the paint to remove any impurities from the paint before you polish and wax.

it makes the paint feel very very smooth.
i like it, but use it with LOTS of lubricant.

however, some detailing guru's are 100% against it. i used it on different cars over 6 years, didn't see anything damaging, YMMV.

If you're timid about claying, look into a paint decontamination system like the one from Finish Kare. Basically, it uses chemicals to accomplish the same thing as claying. I use both, depending on my purposes. However, for removing badly inbedded industrial fallout (often see as very small rusty-looking spots) chemical wash is the ONLY way to truly clean the paint- claying will just pull some of the surface particals. Claying is MUCH cheaper, though- Decontamination systems run $50-$80 for just the chemincals- then you'll need seperate mits, buckets, etc.
