Wow, tough question, guess it depends on what you are looking for: low populated areas beaches, international oriented coastal areas with lots of diverse activities (beach, golf, nightlife, etc), near a big city, more rural, island, mainland, skiing in winter, etc. Spain gets really different from area to area.

As far a mostly know areas for vacation for summer holidays in the coast is either the beautiful island of Mallorca or Marbella (the latter is where sometimes the royal family of Saudi Arabia stay at, the european jet-set, etc). Waz, didn't you visit Puerto Banus (Marbella area)?

What are you maily looking for?

Definately would recomend Marbella, and its a good place to invest in an apartment too. In the last few years real state has been one of the best places to invest money here in Spain. Prices have gone 86% in the last 5 years! and we have only 3% inflation. Due to the strong economic grouth that Spain has had in the last years, the demand has grown significantly, and therefore the prices.

Rob,

Marbella IS it!

Just go to the beaches, make sure you get to Corte Ingles, Puerto Banus, take some tours, there are millions of places to see.. Can't count them!

Carlos: Fadi means, what area in the vicinity of Marbella is best to get a property.. Marbella itself will be too expensive..

And the cars at Puerto Banus The world's oldest Rolls-Royce/Bentley dealership (C. de Salamanca) is in Marbella 65% of their clients are foreigners and are also the franchise of Ferarri, Jaguar, Maseratiand Aston Martin with record sales. But there is a place for everyone's income just wanting to have a good time (beautiful coast with beaches, great restaurants and food, nightlife capital of Europe along with #1 nightclub destination of the world which is the near Ibiza, sunny weather, varied day-time recreational activeties, etc) just don't let your wives near the stores

Waz, I wouldn't know that much, but I have a neighboor who is doing some constructions in Malaga. If I see him I will ask him

A really nice place also are the Canary Islands, my front door neighboor has an appartment there and spends the holidays there. I haven't been there myself but anyone I talk too that has, loves it.

As the other Carlos says, the Canaries are real nice. There are 7 islands, somewhat spread out, so there is quite a bit of variation from one end of the chain to the other. The ones nearest Africa are more desert-like, with amazing long beaches. As you go further west, they tend to get more green, but they all have wonderful beaches. The weather is nice and temperate year around.

There are a LOT of Germans on a couple of the islands... that could be either a plus or a minus, I guess, depending on what you're looking for. The main drawback is that they are not as close to Europe as the Baleares Islands are, by a long shot. But, still worth a visit.

=Carlos=

P.S. I'm biased, my mom is from there! ;-)

We've been to Malaga, it's a very nice and quite place, good beach and restaurants, Corida, telefrique, shopping, remember Waz when your wife caught us inside the strip club
but i guess it takes like 40 minutes(in a carrera???) to reach Marbella.

Ibiza, i still remember this name but i don't remember where exactly, do you Waz?

Ibiza is one of the main Balearic islands, in the Mediterranean off the SE coast of Spain.

It's essentially a "party nation" kind of place, although many local vacationers claim to find peaceful retreats on the island.

Carlos #1 is correct in that Spain is quite varied and it really depends on what you're looking for when deciding on a vacation spot.

The Canaries can be a good option, but they've become too crowded lately. I've gone to Tenerife for years and enjoy waterskiing on the rough Atlantic ocean there. The water is considerably cooler than in the Mediterranean.

OTOH, the whole "Costa del Sol" region, which you seem partial to, boasts some interesting driving routes relatively close by, such as the "Route of the whitewashed towns," including Ronda, Medina Sidonia, etc. which can make for some good sightseeing as well.

Happy vacationing.

Ibiza is an island right off the middle of the mediterranean coast of Spain. Its the club capitol of the world. I think I heard Waz mention Paul Oakenfold, trance, progressive, etc. type music once? well thats were Cafe Del Mar is at, and why so many refferences to it in Ministry of Sound albums, etc. It has the biggest most famous clubs and Dj's in the world, the wildest parties, very liberal atmosphere and people all over the world go there just for the nightlife.

Somewhat OT, but my wife I had an absolutely marvelous trip farther north shooting partridge around Salamanca, in the fields where they raise a lot of fighting bulls.

Incredibly nice roads from Madrid, and what beautiful countryside. It looks so much like California it is easy to see why the Spanish settled so, umm, aggressively here.

Nmoore, next time you go, check out the north atlantic coast, from Portugal to France. The countryside is amazing along that green winding coast
