I wouldn't mix it up with an SL55--or E55--on any open stretch of highway, lest I come away with more than a bruised ego. Me thinks the performance of the new GT3 should be standard for a basic Carrera, o'wise we'll all be driving cars like the E55 sooner rather than later.

No doubt super sedan are bordering on exotic car stats and SUV's are approaching sports car stats but they can never replicate the experience, the driver involvement and the passion that a sports car can, particularly the Carrera in question.

After one, there could be two and then three. My guess is you may be ready in 20 years? It's amazing hos difficult it is to save when you have kids and how little disposable income there really is and how expensive the little buggers are. Of course, wouldn't trade them for the world!

acctually i tried the '03 SL55 i had it for a day (from my friend) and honestly its a very powerfull machine you smoke anycar on the street but the diffrence between it and the Carrera is it is tooooooo huge compared and it can never handle or be driven the way porsche is driven. porsche is small and stuck on the road the 55's keeps skating on the road all the time burnning. and one more thing .... PORSCHE you can feel its solid sport car in a mercedes you are driving a powerfull luxury car with some classical sport touches.
qb]

First of all, great car. But, I gotta say I agree with above post. Mercedes AMG are fast straight ahead but, heavy weight, the SLUSH BOX, and numb steering make me not want one. I have owned a couple as well as the 1999-2001 E55 and I hated driving it. Mercedes has been trying to produce a BMW since I don't know when but, they never hit the mark. I saw a couple of comparisons of the E55, RS6 and E39 M5 where the M5 beat the E55 and won the comparison. Simply put they did not like the E55's handling and numb steering. I believe one mag was EVO and the other was a US mag. But anyway just my opinion, enjoy you car.

The current horsepower race is the biggest ever, more than the '60s. Enjoy it while it lasts, sort of an artifact of the late economic boom. I actually read "lack of power" as a plus/minus of the 310hp Touareg in another thread recently!

That is, enjoy it unless you absolutely gotta have the fastest car, in which case you are going to be getting pangs of envy pretty much every year for a while yet--or be buying a lot of cars.

Personally, I am pretty psyched about all of these very fast station wagons such as the S6/S4, Cayenne/Touareg, WRX hatch, etc. I grew up with a Country Squire that had a 429SCJ in it, love these kind of sleepers.

I've been iching to get another toy before I get tied up even more in the kennel, so I think I can convince my wife if its a "family" car..
She's been bugging me to get her a 7 series, but I can't stand the one control in the center console for everything.

What the E55 is going for $98K???? I was told it should only be around 80k. What is going on? I tried searching for the car last week on Edmunds.com but they don't list it yet. Last time I paid $20k for the birth of my son my wife had too much epidural or those pain killers and it was too expensive. I'll hold off until after the birth until I get the car so I can use the coupon.
