Post Need air intake/filter suggestions

Here's the deal. As part of the deal when I bought my 996 two weeks ago the dealer was to replace the aftermarket intake system that caused the check engine light to come on. I picked up the car today and noticed instantly that the car no longer has that increadible sound when I punch it at 5k. It also doesn't seem quite as responsive. Is there anything that can be done with the factory setup to improve sound/responsivness?

BMC air filters are what Porsche uses in their race cars (and that is what I use). Some folks have had good luck with K&N also. Just be careful with either one that you DO NOT OVER OIL IT. New BMC or K&N's do not need oiling... wrap in a newpaper overnight to adsorb excess oil then install. Too much oil WILL foul your MAF sensor!

Where did you purchase the BMC filter?

I got mine from AJUSA.com but I don't see them on their site anymore (I paid $108). I did also see them on the Fabspeed site ($130). The model is 156/01.

Check out FVD-USA(I believe) which I purchased from them for around $100 when I had the Fabspeed intake. So what intake the car had to trigger the MAF sensor then triggering check engine lite? Regards. Mike

It was a Powerflow intake. Dealer said they have had lots of them come in with check engine light and couldn't get them to go more than around a month without coming back on.

You may want to try the fabpeed intake to restore the sound you want and the umph at 5,000 rpm. It comes very close to the stock look. Don't know much about the powerflow(is it just a hose with cone filter design? I switched from fabspeed to Airetek(cone design) and never has check engine lite triggered. I do know that the airetek when I ordered the cone filter separately they redesigned the cone element to avoid too much air flow which would trigger the check engine lite. But then again some MAF sensors or more sensitive then others and if you don't have problems with the stock airbox then it's not contaminated and not faulty just the filter(cone) is allowing too much air into it. I think power flow and airetek uses the same cone but check out www.evoms. com and maybe they can answer your question. Regards. Mike
