Post Mud Flaps/Guards

Does anyone know if Porsche makes good mud flaps/gurad for the rear of the 996? I constantly have to clean off rear of my cab after rain...mud and dirt manages to get all over the rear as much as I try to avoid it. I would love to be able to find some high quality guards/flaps to help minimize this problem. I had some on my previous M3 and they worked wonders and looked pretty good as well.

I don't know if Porsche makes any, but Mainely Custom by Design, Inc. makes some.

Somebody once posted about clip on ones that you can easily put on and take off as you need it. For autocross and track days and rainy days and what not. I thought it was available at Tweeks, but I just checked and there is none there. Maybe that somebody can post it again.

I agree that clip-ons make sense, although what a pain to have to run to put them on every time it rains. The point is a good one, though, in that everytime it gets but a little wet (rain, or driving through a puddle), the rears get competely plastered with mud, given the way the tail of the 996 is contoured. I myself have wondered about this many a time.

Still looking for the perfect solution.

Regards.

Tweeks sell a set of 4 clip on mud flaps for $50.00. I only installed the rears. They use metal clips and I did not want to cut the paint on the front fenders and risk future rust. See the picture "MY 2001 C4 at Home" on my web site link in this email. I had one warp on me and Tweeks replaced it.

Surely flaps would just stop the dirt spraying all over the 'vette that you just took on the last curve

Here's what you get when you take off on dirty road in AWD. All 4 sides of my C4 Cab look like this. Don't know whether to put guards on (look ugly), or re-spray and cover with stonegard...or use that clear rough paint that Porsche use to use to protect sensitive areas.

The Tweeks stone guards are great. Had them on my guards red '00 C-2 and they were barely noticeable. Sure saves wear and tear on the rockers and quarters as witnessed by Don's picture. Also, they do not scratch the paint on exterior surfaces. You may get scratches on the inside of the fender well, but that can be protected by using tape before you install the clips.

Don,

Is that a picture of the paint completely missing in the areas where it looks white? I'm surprised the paint was completely sandblasted off. Was that the original factory paint?

Cheers,
Ken

Unhappy

Ken, unfortunately, yes. I made the mistake of driving hard on sany roads in early spring and between spinning tires and shall we say higher than normal driving caused this problem. Flares are factory and were shipped with car and mounted by dealer. Unfortunately dealer is in St. Louis and I'm on Cape..but I'm trying to work with local dealer on fixing. I thought once it was fixed then I could have some of that tough, rough protective coating put on that area on all 4 wells. It'l get fixed eventually, butyes the paint was sandblasted off and what you see is primer. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Don,

I put Stongard on the inner fenders (front and rear) of my 993TT. It worked great. I installed it after I saw a few tiny sand marks and realized that it would quickly get bad without some sort of protection. I also had my new 996tt done.

I would suggest repainting the area and applying Stongard. Based on my experience, it will work very well and not be seen.
